The clear delineation between tumor and normal tissue is ideal for real-time surgical navigation imaging. We present a novel indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging technique to visualize hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). ⋯ This novel technique is simple and safe, and is therefore considered to be a promising tool for routine intraoperative imaging during a hepatic resection and further clinical exploration for HCC.

This article describes the Danish National Indicator Project that aims to document and improve the quality of care at national level. Specific clinical indicators, standards, and prognostic factors have been developed for eight diseases (e.g. lung cancer). ⋯ Results related to lung cancer are presented and discussed. The experiences from 2000 to 2008 indicate that the quality of care related to the eight diseases improve over time and that that performance and outcome measurement will get paid in terms of quality improvement.

Multilevel lateral extra-cavitary corpectomy and reconstruction for non-contiguous metastatic lesions to the spine: case report and literature review.
In patients with metastatic disease to their spine and compromise of neurologic function, the challenge is to accomplish decompression of the neural elements and maintain mechanical stability but limit the risk and morbidity to the patient. In this case report the lateral extracavitary approach is employed to accomplish these tasks through a single approach in a patient with multiple non-contiguous sites of dorsal as well as ventral cord compression.

The surgical management of lymph nodes continues to be important in melanoma since effective systemic therapies are not available. Controversy exists around the significance of the early detection and management of microscopically positive lymph nodes detected by sentinel lymph node biopsy and this is the subject of current surgical clinical trials. Complete lymphadenectomy is recommended for lymph node metastases. The importance of proper surgical technique is discussed.

The role of lymph node assessment for patients with clinically localized prostate cancer has significantly evolved over the last 20 years. The status of pelvic lymph nodes primarily served as a prognostic marker for prostate cancer. ⋯ The status of pelvic lymph nodes is also being used to guide further treatments after surgery. Also, recent data has shown possible therapeutic benefit of lymphadenectomy in improving cancer specific survival.
