Quality of life in survivors with a Van Ness-Borggreve rotationplasty after bone tumour resection.
In large malignancies of the distal femur, limb salvage may not be feasible. Amputation is often the treatment of choice. A Van Ness-Borggreve rotationplasty is an alternative when the sciatic nerve is free of tumour. The appearance of the rotated lower leg is poor, which justifies a general concern about the psychosocial functioning of these patients. The aim of the study was to assess the medium- and long-term effects on quality of life (QOL) after rotationplasty. ⋯ Given the relatively high levels of QOL and psychosocial functioning of these patients, these results indicate that rotationplasty is a good alternative in the treatment of patients with a large malignancy of the distal femur.

Limb-sparing surgery has become the preferred surgical treatment of malignant bone tumors. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors that influence the morbidity and outcome of prosthetic knee replacement after resection of malignant tumors of the distal femur. ⋯ In the distal femoral endoprosthetic replacement, higher short- and long-term complications were found after extensive resections. Aseptic loosening was the primary cause of prosthetic failure.

Connexin43 (cx43), a gap junction protein, is implicated in the suppression of tumor cell growth. Numerous cancer cells show a reduction or loss of cx43 expression compared to their normal counterparts. Our previous studies suggest that cx43 expression is decreased in a variety of human brain tumor cell lines. To further investigate the role of cx43 in the development of human gliomas, we performed the present study on human glioma grades I-IV. ⋯ Our data support the hypothesis that reduction of cx43 is involved in the progression of human gliomas.
