To identify determinants of limitations in unpaid work (household work, shopping, caring for children and odd jobs around the house) in patients who had suffered major trauma (ISS≥16) and who were in full-time employment (≥80%) at the time of injury. ⋯ Resuming paid work after major trauma is not associated with reductions in unpaid activities. To assess the long-term outcome of rehabilitation programmes, we recommend a measure that combines patient's satisfaction in their post-injury jobs with a satisfactory level of activities in their private lives.

Trauma is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Thoracic injuries are associated with inflammatory complications such as ARDS. The pathogenesis of this complication after pulmonary injury is incompletely understood, but neutrophils are thought to play a pivotal role. The aim of this project was to gain more insight in the role of thoracic injuries in the pathophysiological processes that link systemic neutrophil activation with inflammatory complications after trauma. ⋯ Penetrating thoracic trauma leads to a distinct primed activation status of circulating neutrophils within hours. In addition to activation of cells, both young and reverse migrated neutrophils are released into the circulation. This degree of systemic inflammation does not exceed a threshold of inflammation that is needed for the development of inflammatory complications like ARDS.

Injury records from Emergency Departments (EDs) have been studied over the last decade as part of the work of the National Violence Surveillance Network (NVSN) and provide information about local, regional and national violence levels and trends in England and Wales. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate overall, gender, age-specific and regional trends in community violence in England and Wales from an ED perspective from January 2005 to December 2009. ⋯ From this ED perspective overall violence in England and Wales decreased over the period 2005-2009 but increased in East Midlands, London and South West regions. Since 2006, overall trends according to Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), police and ED measures were similar, though CSEW and ED measures reflect far greater numbers of violent incidents than police data. Causes of decreases in violence in regions need to be identified and shared with regions where violence increased.

The aim of the current study was to measure and compare the effect of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) and CPC enriched with strontium (SrCPC) for the healing of osteoporotic bone defects in the rat femur using (18)F-Sodium Fluoride dPET-CT. ⋯ We found PET scanning using (18)F-Sodium Fluoride to be a sensitive and useful method for evaluation of bone healing after replacement with CPC or SrCPC.
