Zone 2 sacral fractures account for 34% of sacral fractures with reported neurological deficit in 21-28% of patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the risk factors for neurological injury in zone 2 sacral fractures. The authors hypothesized that partially thread iliosacral screws did not increase incidence of neurologic injury. ⋯ The use of partially threaded screws for zone 2 sacral fractures is associated with low risk for neurologic injury, suggesting that compression through the fracture does not cause iatrogenic nerve damage. The low rate of sacral nonunion can be attributed to compression induced by the use of partially threaded compression screws. There is a strong association between zone 2 comminution and neurologic injury.

Obesity is reported to be both protective and deleterious to bone. Lipotoxicity and inflammation might be responsible for bone loss through inhibition of osteoblasts and activation of osteoclasts. However, little is known whether obesity affects the process of fracture healing. ⋯ In addition, radiological and histomorphometric analysis could also not detect significant differences in bone formation between HFD-fed animals and controls. Accordingly, HFD did not affect bending stiffness after 2 and 4 weeks of healing. These findings indicate that obesity does not affect femur fracture healing in mice.

Hypothermia may attenuate ventilator induced-lung injury in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the impact of hypothermia on extra-pulmonary organ injury in ARDS remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether hypothermia affects extra-pulmonary organ injury in a canine ARDS model induced by oleic acid. ⋯ Short-term mild hypothermia can reduce lung elastance and pulmonary vascular resistance, increase the systemic anti-inflammatory response and attenuate kidney histopathological injury in a canine ARDS model induced by oleic acid.
