This purpose of this meta analysis was to investigate and quantify the relative risk of hip fracture in patients who have sustained a wrist fracture. ⋯ Risk of a subsequent hip fracture is increased for women who suffer a wrist fracture (RR 1.43). Resources and preventative measures should be targeted towards these high risk patients to prevent the catastrophic event of a hip fracture. This meta analysis confirms and quantifies the increased relative risk of hip fracture after wrist fracture in women.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
The outcomes of pediatric femoral shaft fractures treated surgically by different types of orthopedists.
The objective of this study was to compare the outcomes of pediatric femoral shaft fractures treated with titanium elastic nail (TEN) by pediatric orthopedists and non-pediatric orthopedists. ⋯ This study indicated that both pediatric and non-pediatric orthopedists provided satisfactory clinical and functional results in treating these common injuries.

Early readmission to hospital after hip fracture is associated with increased mortality and significant costs to the healthcare system. There is growing interest in the use of 30-day readmission rates as a metric of hospital performance. Identifying patients at increased risk of readmission after hip fracture may enable pre-emptive action to mitigate this risk and the development of effective methods of risk-adjustment to allow readmission to be used as a reliable measure of hospital performance. ⋯ Patient-related risk factors such as age, co-morbidities and functional status are stronger predictors of 30-day readmission risk after hip fracture than hospital-related factors. Rates of 30-day readmission may not be a valid reflection of hospital performance unless a clear distinction can be made between modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. We identify a number of deficiencies in the existing literature and highlight key areas for future research.

Assessment of the association between illegal possession of weapon and assault on school property among adolescents with and without a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) while assessing risk factors for these outcomes. ⋯ Previously it was thought that alcohol and drugs were the main contributors to school violence. Here we show that history of TBIs is yet another significant predictor of violence at school among adolescents. The results suggest that school vigilance and combined violence and TBI prevention, treatment and rehabilitation programs in this population are warranted.

Comparative Study
Outcomes between older adults with atypical and typical femoral fractures are comparable.
Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are rare but a serious complication associated with prolonged use of bisphosphonates. However little is known about clinical outcomes of AFFs. The aim of this study is to compare the characteristics and postoperative outcomes between older patients with AFFs and typical femoral fractures (TFFs). ⋯ Recovery of mobility and reoperation rates after surgery of patients with AFFs were favourable and did not differ significantly from TFFs. Further consideration should be given to using IM fixation in the management of AFFs in older people.
