To assess the quality of life of Latin American orthopedic trauma surgeons during the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America. ⋯ The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America has negatively impacted the professional, financial, and psychosocial health of orthopedic trauma surgeons. It seems reasonable to state that the combination of psychosocial distress and deprivation together with financial uncertainty and decreased revenue can be straightly related to development of burnout symptoms among doctors.

Early mortality following hip fracture surgery remains a significant issue with a much studied, multifactorial aetiology. This study designed to test the variables affecting 30 day mortality in a socially deprived cohort against national models, and secondarily aimed to uncover and quantify new risk factors. ⋯ This study has confirmed the NHFD casemix adjusted model is a fair barometer for units treating a socially deprived cohort. It also has shown a clear differentiation between risk conveyed by delay to theatre for clinical reasons and suggests delay for non-clinical reasons, although clearly not desired, may not have a significant effect on death rate. Finally, it both amplifies and prompts further investigation into the potential benefit of early mobilisation.

Open tibial fractures are rare and difficult-to-treat injuries because of the involvement of bony, skin and neuromuscular injury along with co-morbidities. Often, during the management of very severe cases these injuries, the question arises, should we amputate or salvage the limb? This question has been explored previously in civilian and military contexts in the US and UK but remains unstudied in the alternative sociocultural and economic context of the developing world. ⋯ Therapeutic Level II Prospective Cohort Study.

The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical attributes of patella fracture fixation with either anterior plating utilizing two parallel, longitudinal 2.0 mm plates technique versus a cannulated screw tension band technique. ⋯ Patella fixation with anterior plating technique statistically performed equivalent to cannulated screw anterior tension band in ultimate load to failure strength and fatigue endurance under cyclical loading. No failures were observed cyclic simulated active range of motion in the anterior plate group. There was a trend towards improved fatigue endurance in the plate fixation group, however this did not reach statistical significance. We believe plate fixation technique represents a low-profile implant option for treatment of transverse patella fractures, which may allow for early active range of motion, and these data support biomechanical equivalency to standard of care.

This investigation develops a predictive model for loss of alignment (LOA) following fixation of open tibia fractures. ⋯ Increasing age and BMI are associated with LOA and segmental fracture amplifies the protective effect of IMN versus EF. The importance of LOA as a surrogate outcome after operative treatment of open tibial fractures is supported by its association with inferior radiographic and functional patient outcomes.
