Epidemiology and outcomes of severe injury patients: Nationwide community-based study in Korea.
The aim of this study was to estimate the annual incidence of various severe injuries, case fatality rates, and case disability rates for patients in Korea. ⋯ This nationwide community-based study revealed incidence rates and outcomes of severe injury patients in Korea.

Early rehabilitation training after ankle fracture surgery is critical to healing and avoiding complications. Inappropriate or excessive motion may impede healing or even lead to secondary injury. Currently, there is a lack of scientific quantitative postoperative rehabilitation methods after ankle fracture. Our purpose was to develop a universal method of quantifying early passive rehabilitation training after surgery by finite element (FE) analysis. ⋯ A quantitative method of early passive rehabilitation training after ankle fracture surgery was developed using FE analysis. This modeling method has universality for any fracture that can be reconstructed.

Willingness to participate in a hypothetical orthopaedic diagnostic and invasive surgical trial.
To investigate patient preferences and the determinants of participation willingness in orthopaedic diagnostic or invasive surgical randomized controlled trials. ⋯ This study showed a high rate of willingness to participate in orthopaedic surgical invasive trials and in diagnostic trials. Nevertheless, to ensure participation, it is recommended to put emphasis on the contribution to science and to give adequate information about the trial including the opportunity to talk to a doctor.

Postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in geriatric patients; however, little is known about the impact of UTI in orthopedic trauma. The present study was designed to determine the risk factors and clinical impact of postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) in acute geriatric hip fractures. ⋯ In our study, postoperative UTI was found in 3% of geriatric hip fracture patients. Predictors of postoperative UTI were age ≥ 85, ASA class ≥ 3, chronic steroid use, blood transfusion, and time to operation > 2 days from admission. Results showed that postoperative UTI is independently associated with sepsis, postoperative length of stay beyond 2 days, and hospital readmission. To diminish the risk of UTI and its consequences, we recommend operating geriatric hip fractures in 24-48 hours after admission.

The use of wearable sensors to track activity is increasing. Therefore, a survey among AO Trauma members was conducted to provide an overview of their current utilization and determine future needs and directions. A cross sectional expert opinion survey was administered to members of AO Trauma. ⋯ Surgeons employing these technologies mostly measure simple activity or activity associated parameters. Cost was the greatest perceived barrier to implementation. Further research, especially concerning the interpretation of the outcome values obtained, is required to facilitate wearable activity monitoring as an objective patient outcome measurement tool.
