Hip fracture in elderly individuals is frequent and is related to a high rate of mortality. Finding the best predictor of death will help to develop better patient care. Aim - To analyze the reliability of the clinical data and assessment scores to predict mortality in acute hip fracture in elderly patients. ⋯ To stratify the risk of death, both clinical data and scores should be used. The best clinical indicators are age and number of medications, and the scores are ASA, Lee and ACP.

Periprosthetic acetabular fractures are rare but potentially devastating complications of total hip arthroplasty. As the number of total hip arthroplasties performed annually increases, so has the incidence of periprosthetic fractures, with the topic being spotlighted more frequently in the orthopaedic community. There is a particular sparsity of literature regarding periprosthetic acetabular fractures, with periprosthetic femoral fractures after total hip arthroplasty being traditionally far more commonly reported. This article aims to provide an up-to-date review of the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostic challenges, classifications, and management strategies for periprosthetic acetabular fractures after total hip arthroplasty.

Open tibial plateau fractures: Infection rate and functional outcomes.
Open tibial plateau fractures are complex injuries that require specialized management to prevent complications. The objective of this study was to compare the infection risk and functional outcomes between open and closed tibial plateau fractures. ⋯ Open TPF is a risk factor that increases the probability of fracture related infections. Functional outcomes were excellent for both open and closed TPF, with a slight difference numerical that was under the minimal clinical difference (MCID). The presence of FRI significantly decreases the functional outcome.

Bisphosphonates are commonly prescribed to mitigate the effects of osteoporosis, a condition associated with an increased risk of fracture. However, despite their success, there has been growing concern regarding the long-term use of bisphosphonates because of the increased risk of atypical subtrochanteric fractures of the femur (AFFs). The objective of this study was to describe a cohort of patients with AFFs and evaluate the risk of evolving to non-union, the time of consolidation associated with the location of the fracture, the time of use of the drug, and the implant involved in its treatment. ⋯ According to our study, the localization of AFFs in patients with a history of bisphosphonate use influences the duration of bone healing.

Surgical management of iliac wing fractures: Proposal of a new classification system.
Isolated fractures of the iliac wing are a rare injury, usually occurring in high-energy trauma, and are associated with other non-musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries that could compromise the patient's life. Surgical indications are unclear, and there is limited information on the most frequent fracture patterns. ⋯ The patterns of isolated fractures of the iliac wing allow the identification of three types of fractures. Identifying these patterns can help the surgeon decide to perform surgery in these scenarios and choose the fixation technique according to the number and location of the fragments.
