To measure annual rates of road traffic injuries (RTI) and to describe the characteristics of road traffic crashes experienced by children and adolescents in Tanga, Tanzania. ⋯ The high rate of road traffic crashes and RTI observed among children and adolescents in a medium-sized city in Tanzania underscores the urgent need to improve road safety and increase use of safety equipment in low resource settings.

Degloving soft-tissue injuries are serious and potentially devastating medical conditions where an early recognition is a crucial step for a favorable outcome. One of the most important types is Morel-Lavallée lesions (MLL); a significant soft-tissue injury associated with pelvic trauma (30%) and thigh (20%), located over the greater trochanter. ⋯ MLL diagnosis and treatment must be identified as early as possible. We didn't find a correlation between MLL size and the treatment performed. In our study all patients returned to their jobs and normal life. Patients following conservative treatment take longer time to recover and could require more patient's implication, but -at least- would avoid possible surgical complications.

Because the proportion of trauma patients developing alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is low, AWS risk conditions have not been precisely delineated. We aimed to create multifactor screening strategies to assess probabilities for the likelihood of developing AWS. ⋯ AWS in the setting of traumatic injury is associated with multiple risk conditions. The presence of multiple risk conditions might have additive effects that could contribute toward a clinical manifestation of AWS. The identified risk conditions may be associated with a hyperadrenergic state.

This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of early stress by Tangshan earthquake on symptoms of depression in adulthood. ⋯ Fetal or infancy exposure to earthquake might correlate to depression symptoms in adulthood.

With the large-scale use of whole blood in massive transfusion using rapid infusers/fluid warmers such as the Belmont, questions remain as to whether coagulation potency, platelet number and function are preserved. We aimed to study functional coagulation capacity and cell counts in whole blood before and after infusion through the Belmont rapid infuser utilizing TEG analysis and complete blood counts. ⋯ Infusion of cold stored whole blood in a Belmont infuser, appeared to decrease platelet counts and function as well as activate clotting factors as demonstrated by a shorter R time while not affecting red cell counts or fibrin cross-linking as measured by TEG parameters and cell counts. This suggests that while it is possible to transfuse whole blood through a rapid infuser, platelet quantity and function may be negatively impacted.
