The Masquelet technique is a relatively new method for large bone defect treatment. In this technique, grafted bone tissue is used, and after the cement is removed, the induced membrane (IM; that form around the cement spacers placed in the bone defect region) is thought to play an important role in promoting bone formation. On the other hand, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is known to promote fracture healing and angiogenesis through mechanical stimulation. This study aimed to investigate the in vitro effects of LIPUS on the osteogenic differentiation of human induced membrane-derived cells (IMCs). ⋯ We demonstrated the significant effect of LIPUS on the osteogenic differentiation of human IMCs. This study indicates that LIPUS can be used as an additional tool for the enhancement of the healing process of the Masquelet technique.

Literature shows conflicting results regarding spinal (SA) or general anesthesia (GA) and their influence on the outcome of elderly patients with hip fractures. We, therefore, conducted an analysis from the Registry for Geriatric Trauma (ATR-DGU). ⋯ SA is associated with a higher survival rate, a better walking ability seven days after surgery, a higher QoL, and a shorter LoS.

Trauma & Orthopaedic (T&O) surgery presents several occupational hazards to pregnant women and the unborn child. National bodies have produced guidelines to mitigate these risks as far as possible but individual trusts must be aware of them and implement them in their local policies. Our study aims to re-assess whether national guidelines for the protection of pregnant women are better adhered to nationally by providing a comparison to a previous study in 2018. ⋯ Although an improvement has been made since 2018 in complying with national guidelines protecting new and expectant mothers from orthopaedic-related hazards, a sizeable proportion of NHS trusts do not comply with any national guidelines, putting employees at undue risk. There is a continued need for pregnant surgeons to be aware of and seek occupational health advice from dedicated professional bodies if the NHS trust does not provide specific guidance. Simultaneously, a sustained effort must be present to continue to inform NHS employers of their duty to protect new and expectant mothers and signpost them to relevant guidance.

For displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs), the less invasive surgical techniques vary widely. Herein, the study is to introduce a novel, reliable and reproducible protocol of three-step closed reduction (distracting, elevating, and clamping) and percutaneous screw fixation for DIACFs. ⋯ We consider the three-step reduction (distracting, elevating and clamping) and percutaneous screw fixation to be a reliable and reproducible protocol for the treatment of DIACFs.

Percutaneous sacroiliac screw is one of the main methods to treat unstable posterior pelvic ring injury. However, complexity of pelvic anatomical structure increases the difficulty and risk with freehand operation. Besides, S2 screw fixation began to receive attention. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the safety, accuracy, efficiency and clinical outcome of robot-assisted S2 screw fixation for posterior pelvic ring injury. ⋯ Compared with the freehand operation, TiRobot increased the safety and accuracy, reduced radiation exposure, and improved the efficiency. TiRobot could reduce the risk of S2 placement and provide a safe and feasible way for clinical practice.
