Repair of multiple lower extremity long bone fractures with intramedullary nail (IMN) fixation is associated with significant cardiopulmonary burden and may result in mortality. These patients are at an increased risk for fat embolism syndrome, pulmonary embolism, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), and pneumonia. No standardized guidelines exist to guide treatment of these patients. Further, there is a paucity of data regarding the risk of simultaneous versus staged fixation of multiple long bone fractures that includes both tibial and femoral injuries, as patients with multiple concomitant fractures are often excluded from relevant analyses. Our level one trauma center aimed to identify whether simultaneous fixation, defined by definitive fixation of multiple lower extremity long bone fractures during one operative event, led to increased cardiopulmonary complications as compared to a staged approach, defined as multiple operations to reach definitive fixation. ⋯ This is the largest retrospective study to date examining simultaneous versus staged IMN fixation in patients with multiple long bone lower extremity fractures. In contrast to previous studies, we found no difference in cardiopulmonary complications. Given these findings, patients with multiple long bone lower extremity fractures should be considered for simultaneous IMN, an approach which may decrease hospital LOS.

Traumatic cervical spine (c-spine) injuries account for 10% of all spinal injuries. The c-spine is prone to injury by blunt acceleration/deceleration traumas. The Canadian C-Spine rule and NEXUS criteria guide clinical decision-making but lack consensus on imaging modality when necessary. This study aims to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of CT, MRI, X-Ray, and, for the first time, LODOX-Statscan in identifying c-spine injuries in patients with blunt trauma and neck pain. ⋯ While CT offers high sensitivity for detecting traumatic c-spine injury, MRI holds clinical significance in revealing injuries not recognized by CT in symptomatic patients. LODOX and projection radiography are insufficient for accurately ruling out c-spine injury. For patients with neurological symptoms, we recommend extended MRI use when CT scans are negative.

Awareness of well-being and health issues have contributed to increased popularity of sauna bathing. However, little is known about potential risks and injuries. The aim of this study was to identify the causes for injuries, the affected body regions and to define recommendations for prevention. ⋯ The main causes for injuries during sauna bathing were slip/falls and dizziness/syncopes. The latter one might be prevented by improved of the personal behaviour (e.g. drink enough water before and after each sauna bathing), whereas slip/falls might be prevented by the revision of safety regulations, particularly the obligation to wear slip resistant slippers. Thus, everyone himself as well as the operators can contribute to reduce injuries related sauna bathing.

Electric scooter sharing systems: An analysis of injury patterns associated with their introduction.
With the increasing popularity of electric scooters (ES) and the introduction of ES sharing systems in 2017, hospitals are seeing more ES-related injuries. The effects of sharing systems on traumatic injuries are lacking in the literature. We, therefore, sought to describe trends in ES injuries. ⋯ The introduction of ES sharing systems resulted in increased incidence of facial, pelvic, and lumbar fractures. Federal and state regulations need to be implemented to mitigate the detrimental effects of ES sharing systems.

During the months between April through June 2020 when we experienced the largest number of COVID-19 patients in our hospital, the volume of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) was decreased by more than 30%. In contrast to most early reports we did not notice a decrease in trauma volume during this time period. ⋯ The volume of patients presenting to our Trauma Center as compared to the total ED volume increased during the time period from April through June 2020 versus the year just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fact that the total traffic volume decreased more than 40 percent between these two time periods, the actual number of motor vehicle crashes remained similar.
