Case ReportsVenetoclax and low-dose cytarabine induced complete remission in a patient with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia: a case report.
Conventional combination therapies have not resulted in considerable progress in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Elderly patients with AML and poor risk factors have grave prognosis. Midostaurin has been recently approved for the treatment of FLT-3-mutated AML. ⋯ Here, we present a case of a male patient with poor performance status and who developed AML following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant for high-risk myelodysplasia. The patient with high risk AML achieved complete response to the combined treatment regimen of low-dose cytarabine and venetoclax. Furthermore, we reviewed current clinical trials on the use of venetoclax for hematological malignancies.

Letter Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of benralizumab in patients with eosinophilic asthma: a meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials.
Benralizumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets interleukin-5 receptor α to deplete blood eosinophils and improve the clinical outcomes of allergic asthma. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of different doses of benralizumab in patients with eosinophilic asthma. All randomized controlled trials involving benralizumab treatment for patients with eosinophilic asthma, which were searched in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library published until January 2017, as well as the rate of asthmatic exacerbation, pulmonary functionality, asthma control, quality of life scores, and adverse events were included. ⋯ These findings indicated that benralizumab can be safely used to improve FEV1, enhance patient symptom control and quality of life, and reduce the risk of exacerbations and ACQ-6 scores in patients with eosinophilic asthma. Furthermore, our meta-analysis showed that benralizumab with 30 mg (every eight weeks) dosage can improve the health-related quality of life and appear to be more effective than 30 mg (every four weeks) dosage. Overall, data indicated that the optimal dosing regimen for benralizumab was possibly 30 mg (every eight weeks).

Molecular classification and precision therapy of cancer: immune checkpoint inhibitors.
On May 23, 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a treatment for cancer patients with positive microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) markers or mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) markers. This approach is the first approved tumor treatment using a common biomarker rather than specified tumor locations in the body. FDA previously approved Keytruda for treatment of several types of malignancies, such as metastatic melanoma, metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer, recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer, refractory Hodgkin lymphoma, and urothelial carcinoma, all of which carry positive programmed death-1/programmed death-ligand 1 biomarkers. ⋯ Taking gastric cancer as an example, its molecular classification is built on genome abnormalities, but it lacks acceptable clinical characteristics. Pathologists are expected to act as "genetic interpreters" or "genetic translators" and build a link between molecular subtypes with tumor histological features. Subsequently, by using their findings, oncologists will carry out targeted therapy based on molecular classification.

Biography Historical ArticlePneumonic plague epidemic in Northeast China in 1910-1911: Dr. Wu Lien-Teh's epidemic preventive system for plague control.
Pneumonic plague that originated in Russian Siberia broke out in Northeast China in October 1910-March 1911. On the basis of field visits, autopsy, bacteriological identification, and close collaboration with local authorities and international colleagues, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh implemented a series of efficient antiplague measures, which successfully controlled the development of an extraordinary epidemic plague. ⋯ Wu demonstrated the respiratory transmission of pneumonic plague and tarbagans' role in this spread. Dr. Wu's academic and cultural contributions are valuable in the medical progress in China.

Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of perioperative parecoxib for acute postoperative pain treatment in children: a meta-analysis.
Perioperative parecoxib administration reduces postoperative pain, opioid consumption, and adverse events in adult patients. However, the efficacy and safety of parecoxib in children remain unclear. This metaanalysis included related published studies to address this concern. ⋯ Overall, these results suggested that perioperative parecoxib administration was associated with less acute postoperative pain and fewer adverse events compared with placebo or standard treatments. Parecoxib administration also resulted in less emergence agitation compared with placebo treatment and less excessive sedation concern compared with standard treatments. However, the long-term effects, effects on opioid consumption, and patient satisfaction of parecoxib administration warrant further investigation.
