Prophylactic efficacy of combination of DRDE-07 and its analogues with amifostine against sulphur mustard induced systemic toxicity.
Sulphur mustard, [bis (2-chloroethyl)] sulphide (SM), is a bifunctional alkylating agent. SM forms sulphonium ion in the body which alkylates DNA and several other macromolecules, and induces oxidative stress. Although several antidotes have been screened for the treatment of systemic toxicity of SM in experimental animals none of them are recommended so far. ⋯ Low dose of DRDE-07 (S-2(2-aminoethylamino) ethyl phenyl sulphide), DRDE-30 [S-2(2-aminoethyl amino) ethyl propyl sulphide], DRDE-35 [S-2(2-aminoethyl amino) ethyl butyl sulphide] with amifostine combinations, were given orally 30 min prior to SM exposure. Significant depletion was observed in body weight, organ body weight index and hepatic GSH and GSSG content in mice after SM exposure. Pretreatment with low dose of different combinations of DRDE-07, DRDE-30 and DRDE-35 with amifostine could recover biochemical alterations and histopathological changes caused by SM exposures.

Plants have been extensively investigated for exploring their therapeutic potentials, but there are comparatively scanty reports on drugs derived from animal kingdom, except for hormones. During last decade, the toxins that are used for defense by the animals, have been isolated and found useful tools for physiological and pharmacological studies, besides giving valuable leads to drug development. ⋯ The present review describe about some toxins as drugs and their biological activities. Some fungal, bacterial and marine toxins have also been covered in this article.

Anti-nociceptive effect of duloxetine in mouse model of diabetic neuropathic pain.
The involvement of adenosinergic pathway in the anti-nociceptive effect of duloxetine, a balanced 5-HT/NE reuptake inhibitor, was evaluated in streptozotocin induced diabetic male albino mice of Laca strain. After four weeks of single injection of streptozotocin (200 mg/kg, ip), mice were tested in the tail immersion and hot-plate assays. Cerebral adenosine levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC/PDA detector). ⋯ Administration of duloxetine (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, ip) to diabetic mice produced dose-dependent anti-nociceptive effect in both tail-immersion and hot-plate assays. Adenosine levels were also significantly and dose-dependently increased by different doses of duloxetine. The results demonstrated the involvement of adenosinergic pathway in duloxetine mediated anti-hyperalgesia in diabetic neuropathic pain.

ReviewQuantum nature of photon signal emitted by Xanthoria parietina and its implications to biology.
The properties of living systems are usually described in the semi-classical framework that makes phenomenological division of properties into four classes--matter, psyche, soft consciousness and hard consciousness. Quantum framework provides a scientific basis of this classification of properties. The scientific basis requires the existence of macroscopic quantum entity entangled with quantum photon field of a living system. ⋯ It is suggested that every living system is associated with a photon field in squeezed state. The suggestion has far reaching implications to biology and provides two ways of observing and manipulating a living system--either through matter or field or a combination of the two. Some implications and possible scenarios are elaborated.

Comparative StudyPossible involvement of nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway in the antidepressant-like effect of MK-801(dizocilpine), a NMDA receptor antagonist in mouse forced swim test.
L-arginine-nitric oxide (NO)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is an important signaling pathway involved in depression. With this information, the present study aimed to study the involvement of this signaling pathway in the antidepressant-like action of MK-801 (dizocilpine; N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist) in the mouse forced-swim test. Total immobility period was recorded in mouse forced swim test for 6 min. ⋯ The various modulators used in the study and their combination did not produce any changes in locomotor activity per se and in combination with MK-801. MK-801 however, at higher doses (25 microg/kg, ip) produced hyperlocomotion. The results demonstrated the involvement of nitric oxide signaling pathway in the antidepressant-like effect of MK-801 in mouse forced-swim test.
