Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography: standardization efforts based on synthetic ultrasound data.
Speckle tracking echocardiography has already demonstrated its clinical potential. However, its use in routine practice is jeopardized by recent reports on high inter-vendor variability of the measurements. As such, the European Association of CardioVascular Imaging (EACVI) and the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) set up a standardization task force, which was joined by all manufacturers of echocardiographic equipment as well as by companies offering software solutions only, with the ambition to tackle this problem by standardization and quality assurance (QA). ⋯ Whether these results can be extrapolated to the clinical setting is the topic of an ongoing study of the EACVI/ASE/Industry Task Force to standardize deformation imaging. This study was an important first step in the development of generally accepted tools for QA of speckle tracking echocardiography.

Comparative StudyComparison of vascular response between everolimus-eluting stent and bare metal stent implantation in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction assessed by optical coherence tomography.
The long-term safety of second-generation everolimus-eluting stents (EESs) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the late vascular response after stent implantation in STEMI between EES and bare-metal stent (BMS) by using optical coherence tomography (OCT). ⋯ When compared with BMS, EES showed a lower rate of stent restenosis, similar frequency of neointimal coverage, stent malapposition, and intra-stent thrombus at 10 months after stent implantation in STEMI. Our results suggest the safety and effectiveness of EES in primary percutaneous coronary intervention for STEMI patients.

Comparative StudyEffect of spinal cord stimulation on myocardial perfusion reserve in patients with refractory angina pectoris.
Epidural spinal cord stimulation (SCS) provides symptom relief in refractory angina pectoris, but its mechanism of action remains incompletely understood. We studied effects of short-term SCS therapy on myocardial ischaemia tolerance, myocardial perfusion reserve (MPR), and endothelium-mediated vasodilatation induced by cold pressor test (CPT) in patients with refractory angina pectoris. ⋯ Short-term SCS therapy improved myocardial ischaemia tolerance, absolute MPR, and endothelium-mediated vasomotor function in refractory angina pectoris, indicating that this therapy can alleviate myocardial perfusion abnormalities in advanced CAD.

ReviewRecommendations for cardiac chamber quantification by echocardiography in adults: an update from the American Society of Echocardiography and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.
The rapid technological developments of the past decade and the changes in echocardiographic practice brought about by these developments have resulted in the need for updated recommendations to the previously published guidelines for cardiac chamber quantification, which was the goal of the joint writing group assembled by the American Society of Echocardiography and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging. This document provides updated normal values for all four cardiac chambers, including three-dimensional echocardiography and myocardial deformation, when possible, on the basis of considerably larger numbers of normal subjects, compiled from multiple databases. In addition, this document attempts to eliminate several minor discrepancies that existed between previously published guidelines.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyFeasibility and repeatability of optical coherence tomography measurements of pre-stent thrombus burden in patients with STEMI treated with primary PCI.
Intracoronary thrombus is disrupted by stent deployment and confounded by the development of intrastent plaque prolapse. This study aims at investigating the feasibility and repeatability of thrombus quantification prior to stent implantation using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. ⋯ Measurement of pre-stent TB by OCT during the PPCI of STEMI is feasible and highly repeatable. Pre-stent TB is only modestly correlated with post-stent ATB, which indicates that pre-stent measurements might be of additional value when assessing the TB in STEMI.
