Comparative StudyEchocardiographic assessment of right ventricular volumes: a comparison of different techniques in children after surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot.
Different echocardiographic techniques are available for assessing right ventricular (RV) volumes but their clinical validity has not been well established. We compared the feasibility, reproducibility and accuracy of three different echocardiographic techniques for measuring RV volumes and ejection fraction (EF) in children after tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair. ⋯ Current echocardiographic techniques to assess RV volumes are highly feasible and reproducible in paediatric post-operative TOF patients. When compared with MRI measurements, 3DR was the most accurate technique but requires extra equipment that is not readily available.

ReviewAssessment of aortic valve complex by three-dimensional echocardiography: a framework for its effective application in clinical practice.
In the current era of expanding catheter-based and complex repair procedures to treat aortic valve (AV) diseases, growing consideration is being given to understanding the functional anatomy of the AV complex. Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality to assess and follow-up AV diseases, and the recent three-dimensional (3D) capabilities allow clinicians to appreciate the functional complexity of the aortic root in the beating heart. ⋯ In this review, we discuss the key principles of 3DE for assessing the AV pathology and the incremental clinical benefits in comparison with conventional 2DE and Doppler echocardiography, justifying its implementation in the diagnostic workup of aortic diseases. In view of an effective clinical use, a brief section is dedicated to the acquisition modalities, display, and interpretation of various abnormalities by 3DE.

Is mitral E/E' ratio a reliable predictor of left ventricular diastolic pressures in patients without heart failure?
Aim Conflicting evidence exists as to whether the mitral E/E' ratio can be a reliable predictor of the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP). Our aim was to assess the value of the mitral E/E' ratio for the estimation of left ventricular diastolic pressures (LVDP) in patients without heart failure (HF). ⋯ In patients without HF mitral E/E' ratio is influenced by EF and LV volumes and is better correlated with the pre-a LVDP than with the LVEDP. The suboptimal sensitivity and specificity of E/E' for predicting increased LVDP suggest that the mitral E/E' ratio is of limited clinical value in patients without HF.
