Eighteen-year follow-up of the Göteborg Randomized Population-based Prostate Cancer Screening Trial: effect of sociodemographic variables on participation, prostate cancer incidence and mortality.
This study examined whether previously reported results, indicating that prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening can reduce prostate cancer (PC) mortality regardless of sociodemographic inequality, could be corroborated in an 18 year follow-up. ⋯ These data corroborate previous findings that systematic PSA screening reduces PC mortality and suggest that systematic screening may reduce sociodemographic inequality in PC mortality.

The impact of cytoreductive radical prostatectomy on oncological outcome in patients with prostate cancer and limited number of bone metastases is unclear. Data from cancer registries, multi-institutional databases and a single institutional case-control study indicate a possible benefit of combined cytoreduction and hormonal therapy compared to hormonal therapy alone. However, the results may be biased by a number of factors. The evidence from studies on cytoreductive prostatectomy is reviewed.

This study aimed to assess the population at risk of infection by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing organisms, using clinical criteria. ⋯ A nomogram was developed that predicts the risk of infection by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae with reasonable accuracy. It could improve clinical decision making and enable more efficient empirical treatment.

Simulation-based training is well recognized in the transforming field of urological surgery; however, integration into the curriculum is often unstructured. Development of simulation-based curricula should follow a stepwise approach starting with a needs assessment. This study aimed to identify technical procedures in urology that should be included in a simulation-based curriculum for residency training. ⋯ The prioritized list of technical procedures in urology that were identified as highly suitable for simulation can be used as an aid in the planning and development of simulation-based training programs.
