Because more patients are presenting with self-guided research of symptoms, it is important to assess the capabilities and limitations of these available health information tools. ⋯ The most popular online symptom checker may arrive at the correct clinical diagnosis for ophthalmic conditions, but a substantial proportion of diagnoses may not be captured. These findings suggest that further research to reflect the real-life application of internet diagnostic resources is required.

Repetitive subconcussive head impacts in sports have emerged as a complex public health issue. Most of these head impacts remain asymptomatic yet have the potential to cause insidious neurological deficit if sustained repetitively. Near point of convergence (NPC) values have shown to reflect subclinical neuronal damage; however, the longitudinal pattern of NPC changes in association with subconcussive head impacts remains unclear. ⋯ This longitudinal case series study suggests that NPC can be perturbed over the long term by subconcussive head impacts but may normalize over time. The oculomotor system may have an adaptational capacity to subclinical head impacts, yet the mechanism for such remains an open question and warrants further investigation.

Two-Year Efficacy of Ranibizumab Plus Laser-Induced Chorioretinal Anastomosis vs Ranibizumab Monotherapy for Central Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
Adding a laser-induced chorioretinal anastomosis (L-CRA) to current treatments for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) may improve outcomes and lessen therapy burdens. ⋯ For macular edema caused by CRVO, an L-CRA significantly reduced the number of ranibizumab injections required.

Understanding factors associated with attaining independent research funding by ophthalmology clinician-scientists receiving National Eye Institute career development awards (K08 or K23) in ophthalmology can be important to maintaining the pipeline of clinician-scientists. ⋯ In comparison with our previous report of the same cohort, there was a 93% increase in the number of K awardees who have received an R01 award, with the mean time to award being nearly 3 years after completing their K grant. This suggests that most K awardees in ophthalmology are successful in obtaining R01 grants, but one should recognize this may be several years after their K grant has ended.
