Although relatively little is known about the practice of nurse director rounds, it seems to be a promising way to enhance patient-centered care. The purpose of nurse director rounds, as described in our case study, is to determine patients' experiences with care and the environment in which they receive it.

The use of acute care nurse practitioners in the adult critical care environment is well established. In the last several years, nurse practitioners are being used in the pediatric intensive care unit as well. ⋯ The recent development of the national acute care pediatric nurse practitioner certification examination provides validation of the education and standards of care provided by this subset of advanced practice nurses. The authors describe the highly successful pediatric critical care nurse practitioner program and its outcomes in a pediatric intensive care unit.

The objective of this study was to determine if specific communication elements contribute to nurses' satisfaction with communication. ⋯ Although touted as a patient safety tool, the timeliness of communication was not associated with communication satisfaction. Nurses are more satisfied with understanding, open, and accurate communication, especially with attending-level physicians.
