Failure to deal effectively and promptly with high medical intensive care unit (MICU) staff turnover can cause severe problems. This study demonstrates how monitoring turnover indices might have anticipated a critical shortage of experienced staff that forced this hospital to shut down needed MICU beds. Determinative attitudinal factors are identified from a survey of nurses and supervisors. The authors identify critical problem components and recommends measures to increase staff retention.

Developing trauma care systems: the trauma nurse coordinator.
Emergency medical services/trauma care systems offer unique opportunities for nurse administrators in community hospitals and medical centers to encourage a professional practice model for trauma care in the department of nursing. The first article in this series (May 1988) provided an overview of trauma care and the planning and operational functions of nursing departments in trauma care facilities. In this article, the authors acknowledge trauma nursing as a specialty and discuss the role and functions of the trauma nurse coordinator in organizing and providing trauma care.

You can take the nurse out of the profession, but it seems unlikely that you can take the profession out of the nurse.

Efficient, cost-effective patient classification systems are an essential component of information needed for staffing projections, budgeting, productivity monitoring, and determining the cost of nursing services. Data collection on every shift is typical of GRASP-based patient classification systems. In this study, comparisons among multiple shift measurements showed that no relevant information was being gained by multiple daily assessments of patient care requirements.
