Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffect of Intravenous Lidocaine, Dexamethasone, and Their Combination on Postoperative Sore Throat: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Postoperative sore throat (POST), hoarseness, and cough after tracheal intubation are not uncommon. Although both lidocaine and dexamethasone have been used independently to reduce these events, there is no study assessing the combined effects of lidocaine and dexamethasone. ⋯ Dexamethasone, with or without lidocaine, was effective in reducing the incidence of POST in patients requiring prolonged tracheal intubation.

ReviewIntraluminal Pulmonary Vein Stenosis in Children: A "New" Lesion.
Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare disorder that leads to progressive narrowing of the extrapulmonary veins. PVS has been reported in both children and adults and in its worse iteration leads to pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular failure, and death. Multiple etiologies of PVS have been described in children and adults. ⋯ Lung transplantation has been used as an alternative treatment strategy for end-stage, refractory PVS. Nonetheless, despite the different innovative approaches used, morbidity and mortality remain high. At present, the preferred treatment strategy is frequent reassessment of disease progression to guide use of catheter-based and surgical interventions in conjunction with medical therapy.

Comparative StudySpeaker Gender Representation at the American Society of Anesthesiology Annual Meeting: 2011-2016.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting is the primary venue for anesthesiologists to present research, share innovations, and build networks. Herein, we describe gender representation for physician speakers at the Annual Meeting relative to the specialty overall. Details of ASA Annual Meeting presentations for individuals and panels were abstracted from the ASA archives for 2011-2016. ⋯ Interestingly, for panels that included 2-5 anesthesiologists, single-gender panels were more common than would be expected by chance, with all-male panels predominating (all P < .01). The gender composition of speakers at the ASA Annual Meeting largely reflected gender composition within the specialty, although women were not overrepresented at any meeting. The predominance of single-gender panels and underrepresentation of women as single speakers is a potential target to improve gender representation.

Observational StudyTransient Tachypnea of Newborns Is Associated With Maternal Spinal Hypotension During Elective Cesarean Delivery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
The risk for transient tachypnea of newborns, a common cause of respiratory distress in the neonatal period, is 2- to 6-fold higher during elective cesarean delivery compared to vaginal delivery. Here, we evaluated the association between transient tachypnea of newborns and the degree and duration of predelivery maternal hypotension during spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean delivery. ⋯ Our results suggest that the degree and duration of maternal SBP <90 mm Hg after neuraxial anesthesia during elective cesarean delivery are associated with transient tachypnea of newborns. Future prospective studies should further explore the effects of maternal hypotension, its prevention, and treatment for transient tachypnea of newborns.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effectiveness of Applying Soft Tissue Bonding Adhesive Composed of 2-Ethyl Cyanoacrylate to Epidural Catheter Fixations Using Film Dressings: An Open-Label, Randomized, Parallel-Group Comparative Study.
Insufficient fixation of an epidural catheter may result in migration of the catheter and eventual catheter failure. However, the best fixation method remains to be established. Aron Alpha A (2-ethyl cyanoacrylate) adhesive is approved for clinical use and can be used for surgical adhesion to both skin and blood vessels. We hypothesized that the addition of Aron Alpha A adhesive to film dressing would result in consistent and dependable catheter fixation. ⋯ Epidural catheter fixation using film dressing combined with 2-ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive application at 2 sites along the catheter resulted in secure fixation in patients receiving postoperative epidural analgesia for cesarean delivery.
