Bayesian analyses are becoming more popular as a means of analyzing data, yet the Bayesian approach is novel to many members of the broad clinical audience. While Bayesian analyses are foundational to anesthesia pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling, they also can be used for analyzing data from clinical trials or observational studies. ⋯ We introduce to the clinical and translational science researcher what it means to do Bayesian statistics, why a researcher would choose to perform their analyses using the Bayesian approach, when it would be advantageous to use a Bayesian instead of a frequentist approach, and how Bayesian analyses and interpretations differ from the more traditional frequentist methods. Throughout this paper, we use various pain- and anesthesia-related examples to highlight the ideas and statistical concepts that should be relatable to other areas of research as well.

Bispectral Index Changes Following Boluses of Commonly Used Intravenous Medications During Volatile Anesthesia Identified From Retrospective Data.
Although patients are commonly monitored for depth of anesthesia, it is unclear to what extent administration of intravenous anesthetic medications may affect calculated bispectral (BIS) index values under general anesthesia. ⋯ Modest, but persistent changes in BIS index occurred following doses of ketamine (increase) and midazolam (decrease) during periods of stable volatile anesthetic administration.

Anesthesiology Resident Knowledge of Transfusion Medicine: Results From the Anesthesiology Transfusion Education Study.
Transfusion of blood products is a common practice in anesthesiology. Inadequate transfusion medicine knowledge may lead to inappropriate transfusion practices and patient risk. Using a validated assessment tool modified for anesthesiology, we conducted a survey of anesthesiology residents in the United States to assess transfusion medicine knowledge. ⋯ This examination highlights gaps in transfusion medicine knowledge within US anesthesiology residents. Targeted education may improve knowledge in this area and patient care.

Observational StudyImproving Neuromuscular Monitoring Through Education-Based Interventions and Studying Its Association With Adverse Postoperative Outcomes: A Retrospective Observational Study.
We assessed the association between education-based interventions, the frequency of train-of-four (TOF) monitoring, and postoperative outcomes. ⋯ Our education-based interventions were associated with both TOF utilization and 90-day mortality but were not associated with either the odds of PPCs or sugammadex dosing. TOF monitoring was associated with reduced odds of PPCs and 90-day mortality.

The First Etherization in England: New Research Regarding the Identity of the First Patient, Miss Lonsdale.
On December 19, 1846, at the London home of Francis Boott, dentist James Robinson administered the vapor of diethyl ether to a young female patient named Miss Lonsdale. This was the earliest known attempt in England to provide painless operating conditions for a dental extraction, and it was successful. Many authors have since written much about Boott and Robinson, but scarcely anything is known about Miss Lonsdale. ⋯ Both subsequently emigrated to the United States where they were well-known stage performers. Accordingly, we suggest that both are highly probable candidates for that etherized patient, with the younger sister Adeline then more publicly recognizable. However, no records were found that directly associated any of the Miss Lonsdale candidates with that first dental anesthetic in England.
