Comparative Study[The comparative test of nasal mucociliary function in healthy subjects, smokers and non-smokers].
Little is known about the changes produced in the nasal respiratory epithelium in individuals with an important smoking habit. The purpose of this study is to compare the nasal mucociliary function in healthy subjects, smokers and non-smokers. ⋯ The results were compared using student's "t" test and a significant difference (p < 0.001) was found between both groups. This result is taken as a simple clinical test that evaluates the smoking effects on the nasal mucociliary function.

Cervical emphysema may have its origin in multiple causes. The continuity of the fascial planes connecting the soft tissues of the neck to the mediatinum and retroperitoneum enables the "aberrant air" localized in one of these three areas to spread to the other ones. ⋯ One of the cases is idiopathic while the other one is associated with diabetic ketoacidosis. We analyze this and other causes that can give rise to cervical emphysema.

Case Reports[Posttraumatic retropharyngeal hematoma of delayed onset].
Retropharyngeal hematoma (RE) is a rare occurrence. A case of RE in a 48-year-old man who suffered a whiplash trauma in a motor vehicle accident is reported. He had been receiving long-term aspirin therapy for ischemic heart disease. ⋯ Diagnosis is made by X-ray and CT. If acute airway obstruction occurs it is safer to perform tracheostomy than endotracheal intubation. If the lesion is non-expanding, medical treatment is preferred by most authors, so do we.

Case Reports[Acute respiratory obstruction caused by laryngeal rheumatoid arthritis].
We present a case of acute upper airway obstruction due to cricoarytenoid arthritis in severe rheumatoid arthritis. Although laryngeal involvement is common in severe rheumatoid arthritis, the upper airway obstruction is a very rare complication. The endotracheal intubation may be very difficult in these patients, thus fiberotopic bronchoscopy may be useful. Surgery is the final treatment.
