Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) is a vasoprotective lipid mediator that is mainly carried on HDL in the circulation and several anti-atherosclerotic properties of HDL is considered to be ascribed to S1P. Since S1P riding on HDL was recently shown to bind to apolipoprotein M (apoM), which is derived from liver, we analyzed the possible involvement of liver in S1P metabolism. ⋯ Livers are involved in S1P dynamism, and it was suggested that apoM, produced from livers, increases circulating plasma S1P by augmenting the S1P output from livers and modifies extracellular S1P metabolism.

Lower limbs arterial disease (LLAD) portends high risk of cardiovascular events. Yet, the prevalence of significant occult coronary artery (CAD) and cerebrovascular (CVD) disease in patients without CAD and CVD has not been widely investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of CAD and CVD in patients with LLAD of the lower extremities. ⋯ Severe asymptomatic CAD and CVD are quite prevalent in LLAD, and 29% of patients fulfill indications for coronary revascularization. Cost-effective strategies to detect occult CAD or CVD in LLAD patients need to be investigated in large multicenter studies.

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) indicates tubular kidney damage, neutrophil activation and possibly atherogenesis, however the prospective association between urinary NGAL (u-NGAL) and cardiovascular death in the community is not known. ⋯ This community study is the first to show that the tubular kidney biomarker u-NGAL associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality independent of cardiovascular risk factors and glomerular filtration. Additional research is needed to evaluate the utility of NGAL in clinical practice.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Randomized controlled trial of vitamin D supplement on endothelial function in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Suboptimal vitamin D status is associated with endothelial dysfunction and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases but it is unclear whether vitamin D supplementation is beneficial. The aim was to investigate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on endothelial function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). ⋯ HKCTR-867, www.hkclinicaltrials.com.

This study uses a prospective design to examine the association between self-reported job insecurity and incident coronary heart disease; an association which has been little investigated previously. ⋯ This study suggests that job insecurity may adversely affect coronary health.
