Dengue and malaria infections in pregnancy : Maternal, fetal and neonatal outcomes at a tertiary care hospital.
Malaria and dengue cause major morbidity in developing nations and are more severe in pregnancy. Maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes in pregnant patients infected with dengue or malaria were studied. ⋯ It is imperative to develop guidelines to screen for and diagnose dengue and malaria in pregnancy.

Nature's endless wonder: unexpected motherhood after pediatric allogeneic stem cell transplantation and severe late effects.
Infertility and endocrine late effects (LE) are common sequelae after pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after myeloablative conditioning. Nevertheless, the individual risk for these LE is not always easy to predict and therefore these issues are of ongoing interest to the clinical research community dealing with HSCT aftercare. This article describes the case of a young woman who received polychemotherapy and total body irradiation (TBI) containing conditioning for HSCT for a relapsed anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). ⋯ Subsequently showing a considerable number of LE including hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, she accepted that infertility would be quite likely. Her courageous personal life planning included part-time working and a partnership but not motherhood. This article reports the unexpected and spontaneous pregnancy and the extreme preterm birth of a surprisingly adequately developing child.

Presepsin:albumin ratio and C-reactive protein:albumin ratio as novel sepsis-based prognostic scores : A retrospective study.
To investigate the prognostic value of the presepsin:albumin ratio and C‑reactive protein:albumin ratio in patients with sepsis in the intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ Presepsin and presepsin:albumin ratio are markers of adverse prognosis in patients with sepsis and are superior to C‑reactive protein and C‑reactive protein:albumin ratio for this purpose. Presepsin:albumin ratio may be a novel marker of poor prognosis in patients with sepsis in intensive care units.

A previously presented study investigated the impact of recent pesticide exposure on cytological signs of genotoxicity and on symptoms of intoxication in 71 male coffee workers in the Dominican Republic. An unexpected finding of this study was that conventional farming workers, among other symptoms, reported fewer children than controls working in organic farms without pesticide use. This study set out to investigate possible reasons for the latter difference. ⋯ After careful elimination of the age-related confounding factors, a reduced number of children was still observed in exposed workers. The clearest effect is seen in those workers that reported first exposure before the age of 20 years. Socioeconomic factors could still confound that finding, but a direct effect of early life pesticide exposure is the most likely explanation of the observation.
