Postoperative chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin is superior to radioimmunotherapy with cetuximab and radiotherapy alone : Analysis of the Austrian head and neck cancer registry of the AGMT.
The addition of cisplatin or cetuximab to radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) has significantly improved the outcome. While the superiority of cisplatin over cetuximab in combination with radiotherapy has been shown in a definitive setting, we set out to compare postoperative chemoradiotherapy with cisplatin to radioimmunotherapy with cetuximab and radiotherapy alone within the Austrian head and neck cancer registry of the Working Group on Pharmaceutical Tumor Treatment (AGMT) study group. ⋯ This study confirmed the importance of multimodal treatment concepts in patients with locally advanced SCCHN. Postoperative cetuximab might be an option in patients not eligible for high-dose cisplatin but cisplatin should remain the standard of care.

Multimodal assessment of disease activity in glioblastoma : A single center experience.
Assessment of disease activity in glioblastoma (GBM) can be challenging due to several clinical and radiological pitfalls. Besides MRI, FET-PET and neurocognitive assessment (NA) are used in several neuro-oncological centers in order to improve the specificity of response assessment. We performed a retrospective study to investigate whether the assessment by RANO (Response Assessment in NeuroOncology) corresponds to FET-PET imaging and NA results. Moreover, the concordance of RANO with a final recommendation of an interdisciplinary neuro-oncological tumor board recommendation (TBR) was analyzed. ⋯ The RANO proved its value in the context of multimodal assessment of disease activity in GBM; however, because the implementation of multimodal assessment showed a considerably high percentage of inconsistent results, further studies are required to investigate the relationship between different assessment techniques, in addition to their overall significance to response rating.

Expression profiles of miR-196, miR-132, miR-146a, and miR-134 in human colorectal cancer tissues in accordance with their clinical significance : Comparison regarding KRAS mutation.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most widespread malignancies in the world. MicroRNA (miRNA) has been identified as an important modulator of the biological processes of the cells. This group of noncoding RNAs also has a pivotal function in the growth and development of human cancers, including CRC. Among these miRNAs, miR-196, miR-132, miR-146a, and miR-134 have fundamental impacts on the regulation of cancers. The current study aimed to investigate the involvement of these miRNAs in CRC patients. ⋯ Our data demonstrated that these miRNAs appear to be promising novel biomarkers for early diagnosis of CRC and may pave the way for the future establishment of novel therapeutic options for CRC.

New insights and antimicrobial stewardship opportunities in viral pneumonia: five lung ultrasound cases.
Antimicrobial stewardship is crucial to avoid antimicrobial resistance in microbes and adverse drug effects in patients. In respiratory infections, however, viral pneumonia is difficult to distinguish from bacterial pneumonia, which explains the overuse of antibiotic therapy in this indication. ⋯ Lung ultrasound is easy to learn and perform and is helpful in guiding diagnosis in unclear cases of pneumonia and may also offer new insights into the spectrum of certain virus diseases. The use of lung ultrasound can raise awareness in clinicians of the need for antimicrobial stewardship and may help to avoid the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
