Tinnitus is an auditory problem frequently reported by military personnel and is currently responsible for 1 billion dollars annually in disability compensation. Recent military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan saw high levels of combat exposure coupled with a surge in blast weaponry, both of which can adversely affect hearing. The present study explored the prevalence of tinnitus and the association with self-rated health among military personnel injured during combat deployment. ⋯ Tinnitus is a common source of impairment among military personnel injured during combat deployment and is associated with poorer self-rated health. Future research should determine whether timing of assessment is linked to symptom recognition or reporting, and what interventions are best suited for ameliorating the negative impact of tinnitus.

This study was conducted to identify and understand the current factors affecting recruitment, job satisfaction, and retention of U.S. Army Medical Corps officers and provide historical background to understand if the current factors are dissimilar. ⋯ As the situation in the Department of Defense and Army Medical Department changes, with more focus on go-to-war specialties, the Army needs to better measure opinion among Medical Corps Officers to inform policy. These studies should be conducted regularly to generate reliable information on trends and allow prioritization of effort to areas that hamper recruiting, undermine satisfaction, and prevent retention.

Participating in scientific meetings offers value to physician trainees and faculty. In 2012, the U.S. Government (including the Department of Defense) instituted restrictions on conference travel, requiring central approval to attend. Hence, our objective was to determine the academic impact of research presented at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Armed Forces District Meeting and the effect of this federally mandated policy change on attendance and the quality and quantity of research. ⋯ Approximately one in five presentations at the ACOG Armed Forces District Meeting are published, many in high impact journals within the specialty. Implementation of stricter travel regulations adversely impacted faculty physician attendance, but not trainee participation or the publication rate.

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: An Unexpected Problem in an Unusual Setting-A Case Report.
Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome presents with abdominal pain, nausea, and intractable vomiting caused by phytogenic and synthetic cannabinoid use. Complications associated with this disorder range from severe dehydration to acute kidney injury and rhabdomyolysis. ⋯ While this syndrome is increasingly recognized as a common clinical entity in civilian emergency departments, there is little data concerning experience at military hospitals. We present a case of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome that was diagnosed and treated in a combat-zone US military emergency department in Southwest Asia.

Hemorrhagic shock is a primary injury amongst combat casualties. Hemorrhagic shock can lead to acute lung injury, which has a high mortality rate. Based on studies showing the role of intense light for organ-protection, we sought to evaluate if intense light pretreatment would be protective in a murine model of hemorrhagic shock lung. ⋯ Our data demonstrate that mice exposed to intense light before hemorrhagic shock lung have less lung inflammation and improved alveolar epithelial barrier function. We further show that intense light therapy downregulates lung injury promoting proteins in human plasma. Together, these data suggest intense light as a possible strategy to ameliorate the consequences of a hemorrhagic shock on lung injury.
