Sexual assault in the U.S. Military is a serious concern. Recruiting representative samples of service members to participate in sexual assault research is essential for understanding the scope of the problem and generating data that can inform prevention and intervention efforts. Accordingly, the current study aims to examine response and completion rates of an anonymous survey of sexual assault and alcohol use among active duty sailors aged 18 to 24 with the overarching goal of achieving a representative sample and informing future recruitment efforts. ⋯ Results demonstrated that female sailors were significantly more likely than male sailors to participate in a study of sexual assault and alcohol use. However, once enrolled in the study, male and female sailors completed the 234-item questionnaire at a similar rate. Study findings highlight the challenges of engaging male service members in sexual assault-related research. Despite the disproportionately high representation of men in the military, sexual assault researchers may need to sample according to the overall distribution of gender in the military or perhaps even oversample men to achieve a representative sample.

The condition of trauma patients and the urgent need for timely resuscitation present unique challenges to trauma teams. These difficulties are exacerbated for military trauma teams in combat environments. Consequently, there is a need for continued improvement of nontechnical skills (NTS) training for trauma teams. However, current approaches to NTS assessment rely on subjective ratings, which can introduce bias. Accordingly, objective methods of NTS evaluation are needed. Eye-tracking (ET) methods have been applied to studying communication, situation awareness, and leadership in many health care settings, and could be applied to studying physicians' NTS during trauma situations. In this study, we aimed to assess the relationship between trauma team leaders' objective gaze patterns and subjective expert NTS ratings during patient care simulations. ⋯ This study utilized a mixed methods approach to assess trauma team leaders' NTS in simulated acute care trauma simulations. Our results provide several objective insights into trauma team leaders' NTS behaviors during patient care simulations. Such objective insights provide a more comprehensive understanding of NTS behaviors and can be leveraged to guide NTS training of trauma physicians in the future. More studies are needed to apply these methods to capture NTS from a larger sample of teams in both simulated and real trauma environments.

Respiratory rate (RR) is a crucial vital sign in patient monitoring and is often the best marker of the deterioration of a sick patient. It can be used to help diagnose numerous medical conditions and has been demonstrated to be an independent predictor of patient outcomes in various critical care settings and is incorporated in many clinical early warning scores. Here, we report on the performance of depth-camera-based system for the noncontact monitoring of RR during a ramped RR protocol. The ramped breathing protocol was developed specifically to test the relatively rapid changes in rates, which include clinically important low and high ranges of RRs. ⋯ The technology performed well, exhibiting an RMSD accuracy well within our target of 3 breaths/min, both across the whole range and across each individual subrange. In summary, our results indicate the potential viability of continuous noncontact monitoring for the determination of RR over a clinically relevant range.

Clinical investigations have attributed lumbar spine injuries in combat to the vertical vector. Injury prevention strategies include the determination of spine biomechanics under this vector and developing/evaluating physical devices for use in live fire and evaluation-type tests to enhance Warfighter safety. While biological models have replicated theater injuries in the laboratory, matched-pair tests with physical devices are needed for standardized tests. The objective of this investigation is to determine the responses of the widely used Hybrid III lumbar spine under the vertical impact-loading vector. ⋯ The Hybrid III lumbar spine when subjected to vertical impact simulating underbody blast levels showed that the impact is transmitted via the axial loading mechanism. This finding paralleled the results of axial force predominance over shear forces and axial loading injuries to human spines. Axial forces increased with increasing velocity suggesting the possibility of developing injury assessment risk curves, i.e., the manikin spine does not saturate, and its response is not a step function. It is possible to associate probability values for different force magnitudes. A similar conclusion was found to be true for both magnitudes of added effective torso mass at the superior end of the manikin spinal column. Additional matched-pair tests are needed to develop injury criteria for the Hybrid III male and female lumbar spines.

This study investigated the influence of stimulus color wavelength on cognitive performance in a virtual reality (VR) Go/No-Go task by assessing participant's reaction time and accuracy. Previous research has indicated that color has a variety of cognitive, physiological, and behavioral effects on individuals, differentiating their performance. However, there is a gap in understanding the influence of color on performance on VR cognitive tasks. An understanding of how stimulus color wavelength influences human performance could enhance the control over the design and interpretation of assessment and training outcomes in VR. ⋯ Shorter color wavelengths were associated with higher accuracy in a VR Go/No-Go task. These findings support the importance of color selection in VR tasks and trainings, especially in scenarios that include decision-making and require accuracy. Realistic colors encountered in real-life military operations into VR training environments may better prepare individuals for real-world challenges. Future research in this area could explore color effects in additional tasks and incorporate realistic color-based cues in VR training scenarios.
