The purpose of this study was to conduct a general educational needs assessment to identify deficiencies in current Army pharmacy education while projecting future educational requirements based on changes in pharmacy practice and evolving demands of military medicine. ⋯ With modernized, relevant KSAs, the Army can measure and train a ready pharmacy force. Individual Critical Tasks augmented with KSAs are one potential approach we recommend as a strategy to improve Army pharmacist health profession education.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an advanced medical technology that is used to treat respiratory and heart failure. The U.S. military has used ECMO in the care of combat casualties during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom as well as in the treatment of patients during the recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic. However, few Military Health System personnel have training and experience in the use of ECMO therapy. To address this dearth of expertise, we developed and evaluated an accelerated ECMO course for military medical personnel. ⋯ An abbreviated 1-day lecture and hands-on task-trainer-based ECMO course resulted in a high rate of successful skill demonstration and improvement of physicians' and nurses' knowledge assessments and confidence levels, similar to our previous live-tissue training program. When compared to our previous studies, the addition of telemedicine and patient transportation to this study did not affect the duration or performance of procedures.

Past research has examined civilian and military medical schools' preparation of physicians for their first deployment. Most recently, our research team conducted a large-scale survey comparing physicians' perceptions of their readiness for their first deployment. Our results revealed that military medical school graduates felt significantly more prepared for deployment by medical school than civilian medical school graduates. In order to further investigate these results and deepen our understanding of the two pathways' preparation of military physicians, this study analyzed the open-ended responses in the survey using a qualitative research design. ⋯ Our study provided insight into the strengths and areas for growth in each medical school pathway for military medical officers. These results may be used to enhance military medical training regardless of accession pathway and increase the readiness of military physicians for future large-scale conflicts.
