Acute appendicitis is the most common nonobstetrical surgical condition of the abdomen complicating pregnancy. Appendectomy reportedly is performed during pregnancy once for every 1,500 deliveries. Although the incidence of appendicitis occurring in pregnant women is considered to be the same as in nonpregnant women, the signs and symptoms, and the laboratory findings usually associated with appendicitis in the nonpregnant condition, are frequently unreliable during pregnancy. ⋯ The only consistent finding in all pregnant patients who underwent appendectomy was right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Presenting signs and symptoms, clinical evaluations, laboratory findings, and surgical management is discussed. No morbidity or mortality occurred during this study.

The paper discusses the substantial reduction in weight and volume of the fluids of resuscitation that is possible and desirable on the basis of sound physiology and the vast experience of the U. S. ⋯ These complications were edematous in nature and best known as the Da Nang lung, or adult respiratory distress syndrome, multiorgan dysfunction syndrome, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The advantage of colloid in reducing the weight and volume of resuscitation fluids in forward areas by 60% to 90%, as well as in avoiding the edematous complications of crystalloid-, are emphasized.

Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medication, has gained wide acceptance as a first-line drug for several indications. Recently, interest has arisen in the use of risperidone as an adjunct therapy in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ⋯ PTSD may be complicated by social issues and comorbid psychiatric conditions, and it is often difficult to treat. We present two case reports on the use of risperidone in the treatment of the intrusive thoughts and subsequent emotional reactivity experienced by some PTSD patients, along with a discussion of some possible mechanisms of action for the efficacy of risperidone in the treatment of these symptoms.
