Multicenter StudyInterrater reliability of the Neuromuscular Recovery Scale for spinal cord injury.
To determine the interrater reliability of the Neuromuscular Recovery Scale (NRS), an outcome measure designed to classify people with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) into 4 phase-of-injury groups by assessing motor performance based on normal preinjury function and disallowing use of compensation for 4 treadmill-based items and 6 overground/mat items. ⋯ NRS had strong interrater reliability, a necessary first step in establishing its utility as a clinical and research outcome measure.

Observational StudyReadmission to an Acute Care Hospital During Inpatient Rehabilitation for Traumatic Brain Injury.
To assess the incidence of, causes for, and factors associated with readmission to an acute care hospital (RTAC) during inpatient rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ Approximately 9% of patients with TBI experienced RTAC episodes during inpatient rehabilitation for various medical and surgical reasons. This information may help inform interventions aimed at reducing interruptions in rehabilitation for RTAC. RTACs were associated with longer RLOS and discharge to an institutional setting.

Prospective study of the occurrence of psychological disorders and comorbidities after spinal cord injury.
To conduct a prospective study of the occurrence of psychological disorders and comorbidities after spinal cord injury (SCI), determine psychotropic medication usage, and establish predictors of psychological disorders after transition to the community. ⋯ SCI can have a substantial negative impact on mental health that does not change up to 6 months postdischarge. Findings suggest a substantial minority experience increased psychosocial distress after the injury and after transitioning into the community. Additional resources should be invested in improving the mental health of adults with SCI.

This supplement of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is devoted to the Traumatic Brain Injury-Practice Based Evidence study, the first practice-based evidence study, to our knowledge, of traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. The purpose of this preface is to place this study in the broader context of comparative effectiveness research and introduce the articles in the supplement.

Association between rotation-related impairments and activity type in people with and without low back pain.
To determine whether people with low back pain (LBP) who regularly participated in a rotation-related activity displayed more rotation-related impairments than people without LBP who did and did not participate in the activity. ⋯ The LBP and back-healthy controls who play a rotation-related sport groups demonstrated a similar number of total rotation-related impairments and asymmetrical rotation-related impairments, and these numbers were greater than those of the back-healthy controls who do not play a rotation-related sport group. Compared with people without LBP, people with LBP displayed more rotation-related impairments when moving an extremity. These findings suggest that impairments associated with extremity movements may be associated with having an LBP condition.
