Admission hyperglycemia is a reliable outcome predictor in children with severe traumatic brain injury.
To identify the relationship between admission hyperglycemia and outcome in children with severe brain injury at hospital discharge and 6 months later. ⋯ Hyperglycemia could be considered as a marker of brain injury and, when present upon admission, could reflect extensive brain damage, frequently associated with mortality and bad outcome. Further studies are needed to investigate the effect of strict glycemic control on mortality and outcomes.

To describe the management of acute diarrhea in emergency departments with emphasis on the type of hydration and exploring factors associated with prescription of oral rehydration therapy vs. intravenous rehydration therapy for children with dehydration that is not severe. ⋯ Most children were given intravenous rehydration therapy, especially those with moderate dehydration, without differences according type of service: whether a teaching institution or healthcare provider only.

Multicenter StudyStress ulcer prophylaxis in pediatric intensive care units.
To assess use of stress ulcer prophylaxis in patients admitted to five pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. ⋯ Administration of stress ulcer prophylaxis is a common practice in the participating PICUs, with ranitidine the most commonly used drug. Among the various rationales provided, mechanical ventilation and informal routine use were the most prevalent.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of antipyretic effectiveness of equal doses of rectal and oral acetaminophen in children.
To compare a dose of oral and rectal acetaminophen and to evaluate acceptability of rectal acetaminophen, since oral and rectal acetaminophen is widely used as an antipyretic agent in febrile children and the comparative effectiveness of these two preparations is not well established. ⋯ Rectal and oral acetaminophen preparations have equal antipyretic effectiveness in children. The rectal route proved to be as acceptable as the oral one among parents.

To evaluate the impact of kangaroo care on exclusive breastfeeding in low birth weight newborns until 6 months of life. ⋯ Kangaroo care showed to be a facilitator of exclusive breastfeeding for low birth weight newborns until 6 months of life.
