Predictors and long-term outcome of seizures after bacterial brain abscess.
Seizures are one of the most important neurological complications of bacterial brain abscesses. A better understanding of the risk factors of seizures following bacterial brain abscesses is needed to predict those who will require treatment. ⋯ Cox's proportional hazards model demonstrated that valvular heart diseases as the underlying diseases and the presence of a fronto-parietal distribution of bacterial brain abscess were independently predictive of seizures, and the presence of late seizures was predictive of developing epilepsy. Most first seizures occurred within 3 y after bacterial brain abscesses.

Case ReportsThe enigma of 7q36 linked autosomal dominant limb girdle muscular dystrophy.
Two families with autosomal dominant limb girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) have previously been linked to a locus on chromosome 7q36 10 years ago. The locus has been termed both LGMD1D and 1E, but because of lack of additional families to narrow down the linked region of interest, this disease has remained elusive. ⋯ Advancement towards the causative gene defect in the 7q36 linked disease needs new additional families to narrow the region of interest. The phenotype in the previously linked families has not been reported in full detail, which may be one reason for the shortage of additional families. A comprehensive clinical and morphological phenotype of chromosome 7q36 linked autosomal dominant LGMD with a restricted and updated 6.4 Mb sized haplotype is reported here.

Recent studies have suggested an important role of the B cell chemoattractant CXCL13 in acute neuroborreliosis (NB). Our aim was to confirm the diagnostic role of CXCL13 and to evaluate its relevance as a therapy response and disease activity marker in NB. ⋯ The study confirms the relevance of CXCL13 as a diagnostic biomarker of NB and suggests that CSF CXCL13 in NB is linked to duration of disease and could be a marker of disease activity and response to antibiotic therapy.
