Meta AnalysisCarotid intima-media thickness predicts carotid plaque development: Meta-analysis of seven studies involving 9341 participants.
Carotid intima-media thickness and carotid plaque are well-established imaging markers used to capture different stages of the atherosclerotic disease process. We aimed to quantify to which extent carotid intima-media thickness predicts incidence of first-ever carotid plaque. ⋯ In general population studies, elevated baseline carotid intima-media thickness is associated with incidence of carotid plaque in individuals free of carotid plaque at baseline.

Review Meta AnalysisGenetic variations in MicroRNA genes and cancer risk: A field synopsis and meta-analysis.
Cancer risk has been associated with certain gene variations in microRNA (miRNA), but conflicting evidence warrants re-assessing of significant results in meta-analyses. We summarized published meta-analyses that assess the associations between miRNA polymorphism and cancers to show the validity of the findings. ⋯ Out of 68 published associations of miRNA polymorphisms with cancer, sixteen have shown noteworthiness in our re-assessing meta-analysis. Our findings summarize the results of meta-analyses on the association of cancer with SNPs and underline the importance of interpreting results with caution.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare neoplasm, which originates from odontogenic ectomesenchyme. There is no study in the literature that analyses the best standards for OM diagnosis and how the treatment modalities may influence the recurrence rates. ⋯ The correct diagnosis of OM relies on the association of clinical, radiographic and microscopic findings. About imaging examinations, panoramic radiography and computed tomography are sufficient for the evaluation of OM. Recurrence rates were closely among the two most used surgery treatments. So according to some clinical-radiological aspects, conservative surgery may be preferred than aggressive surgery modalities.

Differential expression of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase in primary and recurrent ameloblastomas and odontogenic keratocysts.
Odontogenic tumours are a group of rare heterogeneous diseases that range from hamartomatous tissue proliferations to benign and malignant neoplasms. Recurrences can occur after 10 years, so long-term clinical and radiological follow-up is required. The study of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of these lesions is necessary to identify new prognostic markers. In this study, we evaluate the possible role of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) in ameloblastomas (AM) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKC). ⋯ This report is the first to evaluate NNMT expression in odontogenic lesions and to demonstrate a differential expression in recurrent AMs and OKCs, suggesting that there is potential for use of NNMT as prognostic marker.
