Assessment of clinically significant portal hypertension by two-dimensional shear wave elastography.
To evaluate two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2DSWE) in parallel with transient elastography (TE) for diagnosing clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) and high-risk varices (HRV) in patients with chronic liver disease. ⋯ Liver stiffness measurement by 2DSWE appears to perform equally well as TE for diagnosing CSPH and ruling-out HRV in compensated chronic liver disease.

Predictive value of serum cholinesterase in the mortality of acute pancreatitis: A retrospective cohort study.
Severe acute pancreatitis has a high mortality of 20%-40%, but there is a lack of optimal prognostic biomarker for the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) or mortality. This study is designed to investigate the relationship between serum cholinesterase (ChE) level and poor outcomes of AP. ⋯ Lower level of serum ChE was independently associated with the severity and mortality of AP.

Protective long-term immunity following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unclear. The study evaluated the relationship between the vaccination status and risk factors in the re-infection of patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 who reported to the Public Health Management System in a province in south-eastern Turkey. ⋯ We are concerned that the re-infection rates and mortality may increase due to new variant strains. Vaccination is the greatest weapon against progression to critical illness in re-infections, even with existing mutations. Therefore, it is important for those without a full vaccination schedule to be vaccinated, even if they have been previously infected.

Coronary circulatory function with increasing obesity: A complex U-turn.
The aim of this investigation was to explore and characterize alterations in coronary circulatory function in function of increasing body weight with medically controlled cardiovascular risk factors and, thus, "metabolically" unhealthy obesity. ⋯ The U-turn of hyperaemic MBF from obesity to morbid obesity is likely to reflect contrasting effects of abdominal versus subcutaneous adipose tissue on coronary circulatory function indicative of two different disease entities, but needing further investigations.

Microvesicles released from activated CD4+ T cells alter microvascular endothelial cell function.
Microvesicles are vesicles shed by plasma membranes following cell activation and apoptosis. The role of lymphocyte-derived microvesicles in endothelial function remains poorly understood. ⋯ T cell receptor-mediated activation of CD4+ T cells stimulates the release of microvesicles enriched with proteins involved in immune responses, inflammation and apoptosis. T cell-derived microvesicles alter microvascular endothelial function and barrier permeability, potentially promoting tissue inflammation.
