Labile plasma iron and echocardiographic parameters are associated to cardiac events in β-thalassemic patients.
Notwithstanding the improvement in therapies, patients affected by thalassemia major (TM) and intermedia (TI) are still at high risk of cardiac complications. This study aimed at evaluating the incidence and predictive factors for developing cardiac events in adult β-TM and TI patients. ⋯ LPI, Hb levels and echocardiographic parameters assessing cardiac remodelling are associated with cardiac events in adult TM and TI patients. LPI might represent both a prognostic marker and a potential target for novel treatment strategies. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings on larger populations.

Enhanced neutrophil extracellular traps formation in AF patients with dilated left atrium.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with cardiac remodelling and prothrombotic state. Enhanced neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation has been reported in AF, contributing to thromboembolism. ⋯ This hypothesis-generating study suggests that in AF enlarged LA diameter and reduced LVEF are associated with enhanced NETs formation, which might have clinical importance and contribute to thromboembolic events despite anticoagulation.

CERS6 antisense RNA 1 promotes colon cancer via upregulating mitochondrial calcium uniporter.
Colon cancer (CC) belongs to a common cancer of digestive system. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are dysregulated in numerous cancers and affect their development. The function of lncRNA CERS6 antisense RNA 1 (CERS6-AS1) in CC remains unclear. ⋯ CERS6-AS1 promotes the development of CC via upregulating mitochondrial calcium uniporter expression.

When type II diabetes mellitus meets COVID-19-Identification of the shared gene signatures and biological mechanism between the two diseases.
According to current studies, more than 20% of all patients diagnosed with COVID-19 globally have diabetes. Further, the mortality rate of these patients is 7.3%. Compared with non-diabetic COVID-19 patients, diabetic COVID-19 patients have higher rates of mortality and severe infection, suggesting that diabetes is associated with the severity of COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to analyse the relationship and susceptibility factors between COVID-19 and T2DM. ⋯ The inflammatory cytokine, TNF, was identified as a core target between COVID-19 and T2DM, which induces inflammatory response mainly through the IL-17 signalling pathway, leading to aggravation of infection and increased difficulty in blood glucose control. This study provides a reference for further exploring the potential correlation and endogenous mechanisms between two seemingly independent and unrelated diseases-T2DM and COVID-19.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor and survival in elective cardiac surgery.
The study investigated the prognostic value of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and calculated a simplified biomarker score comprising suPAR, N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and age. ⋯ The biomarker suPAR and NT-proBNP were strongly and independently associated with mortality in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. A simplified biomarker score comprising only three variables (age, suPAR and NT-proBNP) performed better than the established EuroScoreII with respect to intermediate and long-term outcome as well as hospitalization due to heart failure. As such, integration of established and upcoming biomarkers in clinical practice may provide improved decision support in cardiac surgery.
