Lipidomics of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins derived from hyperlipidemic patients on inflammation.
Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) can have an important role in atherosclerosis development due to their size and ability to penetrate the endothelium. While high plasma triglyceride (TG) levels and chronic inflammation are relevant in metabolic diseases, it remains unclear whether TGs are atherogenic or which TRL-TG-derived metabolites are responsible for inflammation. Here, we aimed to study the lipidome modifications of TRL particles enriched in TG in patients with hyperlipidemia and their associations with a proinflammatory status both in vivo and in vitro. ⋯ High TRL-TG levels are associated with a higher systemic inflammatory status and increased particle concentrations. In vitro, higher particle numbers increase proinflammatory cytokine secretion, with cholesterol and phospholipid-rich TRL being more proinflammatory.

Meta AnalysisCausal relationship between sleep apnea and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A Mendelian randomization study.
Observational studies indicate that sleep apnea is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its related metabolic features, independent of confounding factors including obesity. However, the causal relationships remain to be determined. ⋯ This MR study indicated that sleep apnea has no direct causal association with NAFLD, elevated liver enzymes and insulin resistance. Our results showed suggestive inverse associations of genetically predicted sleep apnea on HDL-C and HDL subfractions, indicating that both HDL-C levels and HDL function may be causally implicated in sleep apnea.

Comparison between interventional versus medical therapy in patients with rheumatic mitral valve stenosis in Tanzania.
Rheumatic heart disease remains the most common cardiovascular disease in children and young adults. The outcome of interventional versus medical therapy on the long term is not fully elucidated yet. This study provides contemporary data on the clinical profile, treatment and follow up of patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) in Tanzania. ⋯ Intervention is carrying low mortality compared to medical treatment. Arrhythmias and multivalvular disease are associated with a high mortality. Rheumatic MS is more prevalent in young people, females and individuals with low income. There is a late hospital presentation and a low use of both secondary prophylactic antibiotics and anticoagulants.

Erythrocyte membrane fluidity: A novel biomarker of residual cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes.
Improving the composition of circulating fatty acids (FA) leads to a reduction in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in high-risk individuals. The membrane fluidity of red blood cells (RBC), which reflects circulating FA status, may be a valid biomarker of cardiovascular (CV) risk in type 2 diabetes (T2D). ⋯ Increased membrane fluidity is associated with a higher CV risk in subjects with T2D. If confirmed in prospective studies, membrane fluidity could be a new biomarker for residual CV risk assessment in T2D.

Platelet-associated biomarkers in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis: Insights from a female cohort with obesity.
There is a lack of noninvasive diagnostic methods for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the severe condition of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Platelet activation, evaluated through certain related parameters, is associated with liver disease and inflammation, but previous results are inconclusive. ⋯ Some platelet-related indices vary depending on liver condition. Here, we reported decreased MPV in MASLD presence. Moreover, we presented for the first time a predictive model using MPV, ALT levels and the presence of diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome to predict MASLD in obese women. Also, MPV is closely related to early liver inflammation in NASH, and PLA and PCT are related to hepatic ballooning. These indices could be widely used for the early detection of NASH since they are usually determined in routine laboratory tests.
