Pre-arrest atrial fibrillation and neurological recovery after cardiac arrest among hospitalized patients: A retrospective cohort study.
New-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke in hospitalized patients with severe sepsis. Post-cardiac arrest patients experience conditions similar to sepsis. This study investigated whether pre-arrest AF is associated with poor neurological recovery following in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). ⋯ Pre-arrest AF is a significant risk factor for poor neurological recovery following IHCA. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, which could inform the development of strategies to improve outcomes in this patient subgroup.

Machine learning for stroke in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction but without atrial fibrillation: A post-hoc analysis of the WARCEF trial.
The prediction of ischaemic stroke in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) but without atrial fibrillation (AF) remains challenging. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of machine learning (ML) in identifying the development of ischaemic stroke in this population. ⋯ Machine-learning models can be useful in identifying incident ischaemic strokes in patients with HFrEF but without AF. CrCl, BUN and warfarin use were the key features.

Review Meta AnalysisVascular endothelial growth factor in inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is linked to inflammation and angiogenesis, indicating a possible role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its main clinical manifestations, Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated studies assessing circulating VEGF concentrations in IBD patients and healthy controls, considering the effect of IBD type, sample type and geographical location. ⋯ VEGF concentrations are elevated in IBD patients, with variations by disease type, sample type and geography. However, VEGF is not a reliable marker of disease activity. Future research should standardize methods and explore regional influences to enhance VEGF's clinical utility as a biomarker of IBD.

Randomized Controlled TrialSexual dimorphism in exercise-induced response on steroid hormones to a 24-week supervised concurrent training intervention.
Steroid hormones are key mediators of adaptative responses to exercise, a stimulus that may concurrently affect their blood concentrations. However, the chronic endocrine adaptations and whether these potential changes are dependent on exercise intensity remain undetermined. Moreover, it is also unknown if the exercise-induced effects on steroid hormonal status are related to the participant' sex. ⋯ Our 24-week supervised concurrent training intervention showed no significant changes in steroid hormone levels. However, a significant decrement of T/C ratio was observed only in women, indicating a sexual dimorphism in the effect on T/C ratio.

Impact of oncologic diseases on outcome in patients with severe isolated tricuspid regurgitation.
Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Isolated TR, defined as TR without overt heart disease, is typical and offers limited cardiac treatment options other than interventional repair or replacement. Survival history of cancer or active cancer treatment may lead to an unnecessary delay of TR treatment. ⋯ Mortality in patients with severe isolated TR is high and increased by active or multi-organ cancer but not by a history of cancer. These patients should be discussed in interdisciplinary cardio-oncology teams to avoid delaying life-saving treatment of TR and cancer.
