Review Case ReportsStatus of renal transplantation. A clinical perspective.
Although the survival of patients on chronic dialysis has improved in recent years, the quality and status of rehabilitation remains poor. Renal transplantation must be used to complement chronic dialysis in the management of these patients. Physicians should not be biased and commit their patients to one or the other form of long-term treatment.

Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism following ingestion of ethanol have been well studied. This article focuses on alcohol-induced hypoglycemia and alcoholic ketoacidosis and the appropriate treatment of these disorders.

The diagnosis of pulmonary emboli may be difficult or delayed because of the clinical similarity to other acute medical events or from superimposed embolic phenomena in patients with pre-existing pulmonary and cardiovascular disease. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and medical and surgical intervention in patients with massive emboli are discussed.

The urgency for therapy in endocrine emergencies precludes the completion of a meticulous laboratory evaluation. However, a few critical diagnostic studies obtained concurrently with initiation of therapy may facilitate subsequent therapeutic decisions. Diabetic ketoacidosis, hypoglycemic coma, pheochromocytoma, hypercalcemia, and hypocalcemia are among the critical disorders discussed.
