Stylet angulation for routine endotracheal intubation with McGrath videolaryngoscope.
The McGrath videolaryngoscope (VL) provides excellent laryngoscopic views, but directing an endotracheal tube can be difficult, and thus the routine use of a stylet is recommended. The goal of this study is to determine the appropriate angle (60° vs 90°) of the stylet when using the McGrath VL by comparing the time to intubation (TTI). ⋯ When intubating the patients with the McGrath videolaryngoscope, the 60° angled stylet allowed for faster orotracheal intubation than did the 90° angled stylet.

Effects of combined oral sucrose and nonnutritive sucking (NNS) on procedural pain of NICU newborns, 2001 to 2016: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis.
Both oral sucrose (OS) and nonnutritive sucking (NNS) are effective nonpharmacological methods to alleviate procedures pain in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) newborns when they were used alone, but the combined effect of OS+NNS remains controversial. So, we conducted this study to evaluate the efficiency of NNS combined with oral sucrose on pain relief in NICU newborns undergoing painful procedures. ⋯ The pooled evidence indicates that the combination measures may serve as an evidence-based guideline for pain relief among patients having minor pain. Besides, it also indicates that OS combined with NNS can be an alternative for better prevention and management of procedure pain in NICU newborns. Nevertheless, the results may be limited due to incomplete data, and thus, more randomized controlled trials or well-designed studies are required to determine the effects of OS+NNS in the future.

Superiority of Interferon-Free Regimens for Chronic Hepatitis C: The Effect on Health-Related Quality of Life and Work Productivity.
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) such as quality of life and work productivity are important for measuring patient's experience. We assessed PROs during and after treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients. Data were obtained from a phase 3 open label study of sofosbuvir and ribavirin (SOF + RBV) with and without interferon (IFN). ⋯ IFN-based regimens have a profoundly negative impact to PROs. By contrast, the impact of RBV on these PROs is relatively modest. Achieving HCV cure is associated with improvement of most of the PRO scores.

The association of ideal cardiovascular health and left ventricle hypertrophy in rural population of northeast China: A cross-sectional observational study.
In 2010, the American Heart Association (AHA) published a new concept "ideal cardiovascular health" (CVH), which consisted of 4 behaviors (smoking, body mass index [BMI], physical activity, and diet score) and 3 health factors (total cholesterol [TC], blood pressure [BP], and fasting plasma glucose [FPG]). This study was aimed to investigate the association between CVH with left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) in a rural general population. From January 2012 to August 2013, we conducted this cross-sectional study using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. ⋯ The subjects with poor CVH status had a 5.90-fold higher risk of developing concentric LVH and a 3.24-fold higher risk of developing eccentric LVH, compared to subjects with ideal-intermediate CVH. Our study found that an inversely gradient relationship existed between the prevalence of concentric/eccentric LVH with the numbers of ideal CVH metrics. Although not all the 7 CVH metrics were associated with LVH, the components of CVH metrics carried a synergistic effect beyond the risk related to the component alone.

Can quality of recovery be enhanced by premedication with midazolam?: A prospective, randomized, double-blind study in females undergoing breast surgery.
Preoperative anxiety is known to be related with the postoperative outcomes, although it remains unclear whether pharmacologic anxiolysis preoperatively leads to better postanesthesia recovery. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess whether midazolam premedication would result in improved Quality of Recovery-40 survey scores, as a postoperative recovery parameter, in female patients undergoing mastectomy. ⋯ Midazolam premedication does not seem to improve the postoperative quality of recovery, though group M showed faster induction and less propofol consumption.
