A selective screening program for the early detection of mucopolysaccharidosis: Results of the FIND project - a 2-year follow-up study.
The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are underdiagnosed but they are evaluated in few newborn screening programs, probably due to the many challenges remaining, such as the identification of late-onset phenotypes. Systematic screening at the onset of clinical symptoms could help to early identify patients who may benefit from specific treatments. The aim of this prospective study was to assess a novel selective screening program, the FIND project, targeting patients aged 0 to 16 years with clinical manifestations of MPS. ⋯ The mean time from onset of clinical symptoms to detection of MPS was 22 months, and just 2 cases were detected at the beginning of the project were detected with 35 and 71 months of evolution of clinical symptoms. Our screening strategy for MPS had a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 85%, and a positive predictive value of 24%. The FIND project is a useful and cost-effective screening method for increasing awareness of MPS among pediatricians and enabling the detection of MPS at onset of clinical symptoms.

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of the labrum to predict acetabular development in developmental dysplasia of the hip: A STROBE compliant study.
Recently, more attention has been paid to the role of the acetabular labrum. Therefore, we designed a retrospective cohort study of patients with residual hip dysplasia (RHD) who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The objective of this study was to investigate an association between the MRI appearance of the labrum before school age and the natural history of RHD. ⋯ Acetabular development before adolescence was poorer with greater labral eversion on MRI scans. The specificity for poor acetabular development was high when the MRI β angle was 65° or more. The MRI β angle has the potential to predict acetabular development.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of left ventricular pseudoaneurysm: A retrospective study in a single-center of China.
Left ventricular (LV) pseudoaneurysm is a fatal and rare condition with a high risk of rupture. The symptoms are nonspecific and diagnosis is often delayed. The purpose of this study is to analysis a series of cases in our institution. ⋯ Myocardial infarction was the most common etiology of patients with LV pseudoaneurysm. The most frequently ruptured orifices were lateral and posterior walls of the left ventricle. Surgery is recommended as the first option, and conservative therapy can be considered for appropriate patients.

Keystone-designed buried de-epithelialized flap: A novel technique for obliterating small to moderately sized dead spaces.
Effective obliteration of dead space after reconstructive surgery facilitates a good cosmetic outcome and prevention of delayed wound healing and recurrent infection. We evaluated the efficacy of a keystone-designed buried de-epithelialized (KBD) flap for the obliteration of small to moderately sized surgical dead spaces. We reviewed the medical records of patients who received a KBD flap following removal of a mass or debridement of necrotic tissue from September 2015 to February 2016. ⋯ No postoperative complications, such as seroma or hematoma, occurred. The cosmetic results were favorable, and all patients were satisfied with their final outcomes. The KBD flap is useful for the obliteration of small to moderately sized surgical dead spaces both spatially and physiologically and shows excellent cosmetic outcomes.

Performance of the LACE index to identify elderly patients at high risk for hospital readmission in Singapore.
Unplanned readmissions may be avoided by accurate risk prediction and appropriate resources could be allocated to high risk patients. The Length of stay, Acuity of admission, Charlson comorbidity index, Emergency department visits in past six months (LACE) index was developed to predict hospital readmissions in Canada. In this study, we assessed the performance of the LACE index in a Singaporean cohort by identifying elderly patients at high risk of 30-day readmissions. ⋯ The final predictive model was better than the LACE index in terms of discriminative ability; c-statistic of LACE index and final logistic regression model was 0.595 and 0.628, respectively. The LACE index had poor discriminative ability in identifying elderly patients at high risk of 30-day readmission, even if it was augmented with additional risk factors. Further studies should be conducted to discover additional factors that may enable more accurate and timely identification of patients at elevated risk of readmissions, so that necessary preventive actions can be taken.
