Anemia is inversely associated with serum C-peptide concentrations in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that anemia is related with serum C-peptide concentrations in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This cross-sectional study was carried out in 1300 individuals with type 2 DM. We measured fasting C-peptide, 2-hour postprandial C-peptide, and postprandial C-peptide minus fasting C-peptide (ΔC-peptide) concentrations. ⋯ According to the grade of anemia, the average C-peptide concentrations differed significantly after adjusting for other covariates. In the multivariable model, the statistically significant relation between anemia and serum C-peptide concentrations remained after adjusting for confounders, including age, gender, family history of diabetes, body mass index, duration of diabetes, glycated Hb, free fatty acids, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia (fasting C-peptide concentration: β = -0.057, P = .032; postprandial C-peptide concentration: β = -0.098, P < .001; ΔC-peptide concentration: β = -0.095, P < .001). Anemia was inversely associated with serum C-peptide concentrations in individuals with type 2 DM.

Autoimmune activation as a determinant of atrial fibrillation among Turks: A prospective evaluation.
Although low-grade inflammation has been linked to the prediction of atrial fibrillation (AF), evidence from some reports suggest that autoimmune activation might potentially be a relevant mechanism. We assessed the predictive value of inflammation and other markers for the risk of incident AF. A score of age-controlled anthropometric, lipid, and nonlipid variables was compared in participants with recorded nonvalvular persistent/permanent AF (n = 110) to those of a nested cohort sample (n = 1126) of the Turkish Adult Risk Factor study. ⋯ Never smoking (compared with ever smoking) tended to predict AF. These findings, collectively, are highly consistent with an autoimmune process in which damaged epitope of apoB due to proinflammatory state emerge as a basic mechanism in the development of AF. ApoB level is likely only apparently reduced due to partial escape from assay.

Sexual behavior across the transition to adulthood and sexually transmitted infections: Findings from the national survey of human papillomavirus prevalence (POP-Brazil).
The sexual behaviors of 15- to 24-year-olds increase the risk of this population to acquire sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The present study aimed to describe the sexual behavior in the transition to adulthood Brazilian population and its association with STI history. We analyzed cross-sectional data collected from 8562 sexually active women and men who participated in the National Survey of Human Papillomavirus Prevalence (POP-Brazil). ⋯ For men, the number of sexual partners in the last year (APR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.04), not having vaginal sex (APR 3.25, 95% CI 1.78-5.92) and sexual experience with someone of the same sex (APR 4.05, 95% CI, 2.88-5.70) were associated with a higher presence of STIs. This is the first report regarding sexual behavior in a nationally representative population sample in Brazil. This study provides more valid estimates of sexual behavior and associated STIs, identifying important differences in sexual behavior and identifying predictors for referred STIs among females and males.

Correlation of ultrasound features and the Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm score for different histopathological subtypes of benign adnexal masses.
Ovarian masses are one of the most frequently identified entities in gynecological practice. Early differential diagnosis is a key factor in the medical management of each patient. Transvaginal ultrasound along with additional preoperative testing, such as serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels and the Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm (ROMA) score, usually provide sufficient information for a presumptive diagnosis. ⋯ Our results showed that transvaginal ultrasound established a presumptive diagnosis for almost half of our patients. Cystectomy was the main surgical procedure used for the management of benign ovarian masses. Endometriosis was the most common benign ovarian pathology evaluated and treated in our study.

Continuous endovenous administration of Endostar (CE) gradually replaced drip intravenous administration of Endostar (DE) in lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treatment presently, but the efficacy and safety of CE and DE which is better in advanced lung SCC are yet unclear. To evaluate the feasibility of CE as an alternative to DE with gemcitabine/cisplatin (GP) chemotherapy. Data were collected from patients admitted with locally advanced or metastatic lung SCC from January 2011 to April 2015, including the patients' characteristics, the therapeutic regimen, the treatment effectiveness, and toxicity. ⋯ Increased progression-free survival (PFS) for patients in CE group was observed across 3 subgroups analyzed. There was a 35.7% reduction in the total dose of Endostar per cycle in the CE group compared with that in the DE group. Thus, in combination with GP chemotherapy, CE could be a suitable alternative to DE in locally advanced or metastatic SCC patients, resulting in less hemoptysis, less treatment time, and lower costs.
