Review Case Reports
Ovarian yolk sac tumor in postmenopausal females: A case series and a literature review.
Ovarian yolk sac tumors (YSTs) are the second most common histologic type of ovarian germ cell tumors. Most patients are adolescent and young women, while cases in postmenopausal women were rarely reported. Due to its rarity, we know little about the treatment and prognosis of postmenopausal patients with ovarian YSTs. We reported 3 cases of mixed ovarian YST in postmenopausal females reviewed the related current English literature. ⋯ The diagnosis of postmenopausal ovarian YST is relatively difficult and it can coexist with other germ cell or epithelial tumors. Postmenopausal ovarian YSTs are aggressive, and may have a worse prognosis compared with those in young patients. More aggressive treatment is needed. When YST mixed with epithelial cancer components, adjuvant chemotherapy regimen should include platinum-based chemotherapy aiming at both epithelial ovarian cancer and germ cell tumors.

Peritoneal dialysis in older adults: Evaluation of clinical, nutritional, metabolic outcomes, and quality of life.
The number of older adults requiring dialysis is increasing worldwide, whereas the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in this population is lower with respect to younger patients, despite the theoretical advantages of PD respect to hemodialysis. This is most likely due to the concern that older patients may not be able to correctly and safely manage PD. We aimed to prospectively compare clinical, nutritional and metabolic outcomes and measures of quality of life between younger (<65 years old) and older (≥65 years old) patients on PD. ⋯ At T1 Group B showed, compared to baseline, a significant reduction in albumin (P < .0001) and phosphorus (P = .045) levels, while no significant differences on body composition, technique survival, total number of hospitalizations, index of peritonitis, and quality of life indices were observed. Our data do not show clinically relevant barriers to use PD in older adult patients, supporting its use in this population. Nutritional and metabolic parameters should be carefully monitored in older PD patients.

Recurrent symblepharon is very difficult to cure. Techniques applied in symblepharon with no recurrence or low recurrent rate is rare and vital. ⋯ Reversed split-thickness skin graft is much less soft compared to other materials to treat symblepharon and can be used to reconstruct conjunctival sac with no or little recurrence.

Posterior surgical treatment of ankylosing spondylitis with spinal tuberculosis: A case series and long-term follow-up.
This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of posterior surgical treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with spinal tuberculosis (STB). This was a retrospective study including 12 patients treated between January 2004 and April 2014 for AS with STB at our department. All patients underwent 1-stage posterior internal fixation, debridement, and bone fusion. ⋯ The VAS significantly was considerably improved between the preoperative and the last clinical visits. These positive results demonstrate that 1-stage surgical treatment for AS with STB by posterior debridement, fusion, and instrumentation can be an effective and feasible treatment method for this specific condition. It should be noted that it is necessary to carry out antiosteoporosis treatment and perform long-segmental instrumentation in order to obtain spinal stabilization.

Fenestrated atrial septal defect (ASD) occlusion has been performed in patients complicated with severe pulmonary hypertension (PH). Nevertheless, the persistent interatrial residual shunting in the fenestration might increase the risk of paradoxical embolism. Percutaneous closure of fenestrated ASD occluder (ASO) has not yet been reported. ⋯ This case illustrates that percutaneous closure of the residual shunting in fenestrated ASO was feasible and safe for short- and long-term.
