Observational Study
Concomitant lung adenocarcinoma and pulmonary cryptococcosis confirmed by pathologic examinations.
To describe the characteristics of concomitant lung cancer and pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) cases. A total of 8 patients with lung cancer and coexisting PC, who were admitted to Fuzhou Pulmonary Hospital of Fujian from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2015 and whose diagnoses were confirmed by pathological examinations, were studied. One patient had a history of diabetes mellitus and 1 had a history of treated with surgery. ⋯ One patient with advanced lung cancer and PC was treated with antifungal therapy in combination with antineoplastic chemotherapy, but she failed to improve and died 10 months after symptom onset during the follow-up period. PC coexisting with pulmonary carcinoma is rare. PC can manifest as pulmonary nodules and mimic malignant lesions, so it must be considered during a differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules, especially in immunosuppressed patients.

This study assessed sex differences in cardiac and motor functions, quality of life (QoL), and mental status in Chinese chronic heart failure (CHF) patients after metoprolol treatment. This single-center prospective study, conducted from February 2013 to April 2016, included CHF patients (men and women) with resting heart rate (HR) >80 beats/min using metoprolol continuous release tablets. Metoprolol-induced changes in cardiac and motor functions, QoL, and mental status at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months from baseline, within and between the sexes, were analyzed. ⋯ Copenhagen Burnout Inventory score significantly increased in men (mean score 62.43, P < .05). Metoprolol treatment improves cardiac and motor functions, QoL, and anxiety scores but causes greater depression and burnout in men and women. Sex was seen to affect mental status of CHF patients the most.

The incidence of double aneurysms on the ophthalmic segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is very rare. Nevertheless, delayed rupture of a parent artery instead of the aneurysmal sac following pipeline embolization device (PLED) is unusual. ⋯ Manipulation of the tortuous parent artery resulted in a focal traumatic weakness in the artery and subsequently a delay tear. We are of the view that, endovascular surgeons should be on the lookout for this complication following flow deviation treatment modalities.

Case Reports
Chlorpheniramine-induced anaphylaxis: Two case reports and a retrospective review of pharmacovigilance database.
Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction which could be life-threatening. To date, it could be diagnosed by causality between clinical manifestations and triggers. But it is not always easy to find out the clue. Chlorpheniramine maleate (peniramin) is known to safe and it is an antihistamine commonly used to treat almost the whole allergic disease, including urticaria and allergic rhinitis. We recently experienced 2 cases of chlorpheniramine induced anaphylaxis. To document suspected cases of chlorpheniramine-induced adverse reactions, we analyzed a database spontaneously reported adverse drug reactions in the Ajou Regional Pharmacovigilance Center from 2011 to 2017. ⋯ Physicians should be aware chlorpheniramine could be a cause for allergic reaction. In addition, we suggest that serum tryptase level, skin prick test, and intradermal test could be considered as a supplementary test for diagnosing chlorpheniramine anaphylaxis and cross-reactivity should also be considered.

To investigate the difference in messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and protein expression of growth arrest DNA damage-inducible gene 45α (GADD45α), mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2), and P73 in cancer and cancer-adjacent tissues in patients with non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). We compared the mRNA expression of GADD45α and MDM2 and the protein expression of GADD45α, MDM2, and P73 in lung cancer and cancer-adjacent tissues in NSCLC patients by quantitative real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and Western Blot (WB). We analyzed GADD45α, MDM2, and P73 expression in patients with different pathological types of NSCLC, and the correlation of these genes with gender, smoking history, and TNM/T stages. ⋯ In addition, WB results indicated that P73 protein expression significantly decreased in cancer tissues in patients with adenocarcinoma (P = .03), but not squamous carcinoma. MDM2 and P73 protein levels were differentially regulated in cancer and cancer-adjacient tissues in patients with sub types of NSCLC. There was no significant difference in GADD45α expression between cancer and cancer-adjacent tissues in NSCLC patients.
