Prostate cancer (PCa) is a frequently diagnosed malignant solid tumor in men. The etiology of PCa has been attributed to both environmental and genetic factors. In recent years, many studies have reported that miRNA gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influence the susceptibility to several diseases such as cancer. ⋯ We found that miR-23a gene polymorphism rs3745453 carrying CC homozygotes had a 4.16-fold increased risk (95% CI = 1.30-13.25) than those carrying the TT/CT genotypes (P = .02), and the C allele displayed a higher prevalence of PCa than the T allele (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.16-2.45, P = .01). Moreover, miR-23a showed that the homozygous carriers of the C-variant significantly increased the risk of survival rate as compared to the carriers of the TT/CT genotype (OR = 9.67, 95% CI = 2.83-33.09, P = .001). The rs3745453 polymorphism was potentially associated with PCa in the Chinese Han population and had an interactive relationship with the environmental factors.

Modified double-opposing Z-plasty for patients with Veau I cleft palate: Are lateral relaxing incisions necessary?
Low fistula rate and a satisfactory speech outcome were previously reported by adopting a modified Furlow palatoplasty using small double-opposing Z-plasty (DOZ). The purposes of this study were to (1) describe the technical standardization of further modification of this small DOZ using the medial incision (MIDOZ) approach for Veau I cleft repair; (2) assess the early postoperative outcomes of a single surgeon's experience using this technique; and (3) evaluate the temporal association of this standardization with the necessity of lateral relaxing incisions. A prospective study (n = 24) was performed consecutively to non-syndromic patients with Veau I cleft palate who underwent MIDOZ approach. ⋯ No postoperative complications, such as bleeding, flap necrosis, dehiscence or fistula were observed. The prospective group had a significantly (all P < .05) higher rate of hamulus fractures (n = 48, 100%) and a lower rate of lateral relaxing incisions (n = 1, 2%) than the retrospective group (n = 16, 32%; n = 26, 52%). This technical standardization for performing palatoplasty using MIDOZ approach provided adequate Veau I cleft palate closure, without fistula formation, and with a low need of lateral relaxing incisions.

Cisplatin is often used for the treatment of oral cancer (OC). However, there are inconsistent results. Thus, this study plans to systematically assess the clinical efficacy and safety of cisplatin for adult patients with OC. ⋯ PROSPERO CRD42019156558.

Annual pancreatic tumor incidence rates have been increasing. We explored pancreatic tumor incidence trends by treatment and clinicopathologic features. Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) was retrieved to evaluate temporal trends and pancreatic cancer rates from 2000 to 2015. ⋯ Patients undergoing surgical treatment without chemotherapy and radiotherapy had the higher rates compared with those who received other combined treatments. Pancreatic cancer has been increasing overall, but patterns differ by demographics and clinicopathologic features. Efforts to identify and treat more eligible candidates for curative therapy could be beneficial.

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder. The obstetric course of women with KTS varies. Complications include bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), thromboembolic events, etc. PATIENT CONCERNS:: Here, we report a case of late puerperal hemorrhage of a Chinese puerpera with KTS. The repeating severe hemorrhage, the DIC, and the Kasabach-Merrit syndrome made the treatment more difficult. ⋯ An interdisciplinary cooperation of obstetrician, anesthesiologist, vascular surgeon, and intensive care physician is highly recommended. Prophylactic anticoagulation is generally advised in the gestational and postpartum period.
