Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorder involving multiple organ systems. In BD, intestinal ulcers can present as a refractory lesion capable of perforation, which makes the choice of treatment difficult. ⋯ This case indicates that ADa may be an effective treatment option in future cases, minimizing complications and allowing the closure operation to be performed successfully.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) incidence in Taiwan is highest worldwide. This study analyzed the relationship between health resource use and patients on hemodialysis (HD) asking for medical help as well as the outcomes in Taiwan. This was a retrospective cohort study that analyzed the medical data of patients on dialysis, which were collected from the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan for the period 2000 to 2010. ⋯ Considering 5-year survival status, the mortality rate of patients with HD was 21.94% (255 of 1162), among which those with a history of cerebrovascular disease and diabetes were 68.63% and 72.16%, respectively. Long interdialytic intervals may induce emergency dialysis. Therefore, the frequency of emergent HD therapy has increased (thrice a week), as predicted in the current HD policy.

Effects of receptor activator nuclear factor κB gene polymorphisms on the susceptibility to knee osteoarthritis: A case-control study.
The present study aimed to explore genetic association of receptor activator nuclear factor κB (RANK) polymorphisms with individual susceptibility to knee osteoarthritis (OA) in different Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades. This case-control study included 138 knee OA patients and 145 healthy individuals. RANK rs1805034 and rs8086340 polymorphisms were genotyped through polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). ⋯ The C allele of rs1805034 polymorphism had significantly higher frequency in knee OA patients than in controls (P = .044), indicating that this allele could increase the risk of knee OA (OR = 1.424, 95% CI = 1.010-2.008). Besides, the CC genotype and C allele of the rs1805034 polymorphism were significantly associated with elevated risk of knee OA in moderate grade (CC vs TT: P = .018, OR = 3.071, 95% CI = 1.187-7.941; C vs T: P = .012, OR = 1.787, 95% CI = 1.131-2.823). However, rs8086340 polymorphism had no significant association with knee OA riskThe C allele of RANK rs1805034 polymorphism is closely correlated with increased risk of knee OA, especially for moderate grade.

Similarities between embryonic development and tumorigenesis are reflected in biological behavior and gene expression. Although the gene signature during development and the clinical phenotype of different cancers show certain correlation pattern, the correlation between early embryo development and cancer remains largely unexplored. To compare the gene expression profile between development and cancer, our study analyzed the gene expression of chorionic villi samples at different gestational ages (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 40 weeks) obtained from gene expression omnibus (GEO) datasets using correlation test. ⋯ These gene clusters were also dysregulated in lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Moreover the prognostic value of the gene clusters was then analyzed with TCGA lung SCC data, which showed 4 clusters that were associated with prognosis. Our results demonstrate the gene expression similarity between development and lung SCC and identified development-associated gene clusters that could contain prognostic information for lung SCC patients.

Acute lung injury following lung resection surgery is not rare and often related to mortality. Although it has been a significant clinical and economic impact associated with increased intensive care unit (ICU) utilization, length of hospital stay, and associated cost, it is unpredictable. Aims of this study were to identify the modifiable risk factors of postoperative acute lung injury (PALI) following lung cancer surgery. ⋯ PALI increases ICU admission, use of mechanical ventilator, duration of hospital stay, and mortality. The clinical impact of PALI is marked. Significant independent risk factors have been identified in underlying ischemic heart disease, interstitial lung disease, intravascular crystalloid fluid, and transfusion during surgery.
