The incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing year by year, and various complications can endanger the lives of patients. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accounts for more than 90% of DM, most of which is associated with insulin resistance (IR), and IR has been shown to be closely related to the onset of T2DM and the presence of DM complications. Berberine (BBR) has been shown to improve T2DM with IR in a number of ways. In this study, we aim to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BBR in the treatment of T2DM with IR to provide the newest evidence for clinical use. ⋯ Because all of the data used in this systematic review has been published, ethical approval is not required.

Mid-arm circumference method is invalid to estimate the body weight of elderly Emergency Department patients in the Netherlands.
In the Emergency Department (ED) actual body weight (ABW) is essential for accurate drug dosing. Frequently, the ABW is unknown and direct measurement troublesome. A method using the mid-arm circumference (MAC) to estimate ABW has been developed and validated in the United States of America (USA). ⋯ However it is not accurate within the Dutch elderly ED population. Consequently, it is not applicable to Dutch EDs. This study highlights that the results of anthropometric studies performed within the USA are not per se generalizable to the European population.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a universal chronic nonspecific intestinal inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. Although 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is used as a first-line treatment for mild-to-moderate UC, some patients do not react well to it. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays a complementary role in the management of UC. A large number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that TCM has a significant effect in the treatment of mild-to-moderate UC. However, due to the diversity of TCM treatments, its relative effectiveness and safety remains unclear. Therefore, we aim to compare the effectiveness and safety of TCM for mild-to-moderate UC by implementing a Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) and provide a reference for clinical treatment. ⋯ PROSPERO CRD42019133962.

Habitual abortion is caused by complex and diverse factors, such as genetic factors, immune factors, endocrine factors, viruses, bacterial infections, and so on. Allogeneic antibodies, generated due to blood-group incompatibilities between a female and her fetus, are sometimes important for habitual abortion. ⋯ This is the first case of habitual abortion caused by p phenotype due to independent 903C>G homozygous mutation with no similar record reported before, which indicates that it is a new class of mutation that leads to p phenotype.
