Previous studies have reported that self-selection of the training intensity can be an interesting strategy to improve adherence in aerobic exercise programs. However, its effectiveness with weight training has not been systematically reviewed and remains unclear. In this study, we will describe a systematic review protocol that aims to investigate if people are able to self-select an intensity during weight training sufficient to enhance muscular strength. ⋯ CRD42019120323.

Controversies exist between the previous two prognostic nomograms for patients with bone metastatic prostate cancer (PCa), and a nomogram applied to western patients has yet to be established. Thus, we aimed to build a reliable and generic nomogram to individualize prognosis. The independent prognostic factors were identified in a retrospective study of 1556 patients with bone metastatic PCa registered in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. ⋯ Moreover, calibration curves presented perfect agreements between the nomogram-predicted and actual 1-, 2-, and 3-year CSS rate in both the primary and external validation cohorts. In other words, our nomogram has great predictive accuracy and reliability in predicting 1-, 2-, and 3-year CSS for patients with bone metastatic prostate cancer. This study established and validated a prognostic nomogram applied to not only Asian patients but western patients with bone metastatic PCa, which will be useful for patients' counseling and clinical trial designing.

The prevalence of obesity has increased over the past few years, becoming a public health problem. Generally, the primary therapeutic remedies are diet, physical exercise, medication, and bariatric surgery. However, an increased number of obese and overweight people are using complementary and herbal slimming supplements. ⋯ Adults who consume complementary medication based on kelp seaweed should be informed of the risk of developing thyroid dysfunction also in the absence of any pre-existing thyroid disease. Due to the high iodine content, supplements containing kelp should be taken with the supervision of a physician and with monitoring of thyroid function.

To investigate factors predicting the onset of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) for patients with non-ST-segment elevation infarction (NSTEMI) and single concomitant chronic total occlusion (CTO). Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) both play essential role in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular homoeostasis. However, current knowledge of its predictive prognostic value is limited.422 patients with NSTEMI and CTO (59.7 ± 12.4 years, 74.2% men) who underwent successful pPCI were enrolled and followed for 2 years. ⋯ ROC analysis indicated NGAL 7 day (AUC = 0.680, P = .0054 and AUC = 0.622, P = .0005) and LVEF (AUC = 0.691, P = .0298 and AUC = 0.605, P = .0021) could predict both in-hospital and 2 years MACCEs, while higher NGAL at admission could only predict poorer in-hospital prognosis (AUC = 0.665, P = .0103). Further analysis showed the prognostic value of NGAL was particularly remarkable among those HbA1C<6.5%. Patients with NSTEMI and single concomitant CTO receiving pPCI with higher NGAL on 7 days during hospitalization are more likely to suffer 2 years MACCEs, particularly in those with lower HbA1C.

Compared with most malignant tumors, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is usually associated with favorable survival and low recurrence rate. The prognostic factors of PTC include age, sex, tumor size, enlarged lymph nodes, and extrathyroidal extension. Among the extrathyroidal extension, upper aerodigestive tract (ADT) invasion by PTC is a marker of more aggressive tumor behavior, defining a subpopulation of patients at a greater risk of recurrence and death. ⋯ When patients with PTC have haemoptysis, hoarseness, dyspnea, or any other symptoms, and the imaging examinations reveal a space-occupying lesion in the thyroid and airway, clinicians should focus on PTC with tracheal invasion, a bronchoscopic examination must be immediately performed because the subsequent surgical management depends on the degree of tracheal invasion.
