Comparison of epidural, spinal, and saddle block for holmium laser enucleation of prostate (HoLEP): A prospective randomized, comparative study.
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) has become an important treatment modality for benign prostate hypertrophy. The aim of the present study was to compare regional anesthesia methods for HoLEP operation and to determine the optimal technique. ⋯ Among 3 techniques, saddle block might be preferable in HoLEP because an adequate sensorial level was achieved with lower motor block and stable hemodynamics.

Liver disease etiology and transplantation outcomes may vary by ethnicity. We aimed to determine if disparities exist in our province. We reviewed the provincial database for liver transplant referrals. ⋯ We have noted emerging trends such as alcohol related liver disease and PSC in South Asians. First Nations have increased autoimmune liver disease, lower transplantation rates and higher waitlist deaths. These data have significance for designing ethnicity specific interventions.

Intraventricular hemorrhage is a serious intracerebral hemorrhagic disease with high mortality and poor prognosis. This retrospective study designed to investigate the therapeutic effect of transcortical approach surgery versus extraventricular drainage (EVD) on patients with intraventricular hemorrhage. Patients with intraventricular hemorrhage in Zhongshan City People's Hospital from January 01, 2014 to June 01, 2019 were retrospectively examined. ⋯ The 30-day postoperative mortality was 16/56 in the EVD group and 1/23 in the transcortical approach surgery group. The transcortical approach surgery group was significantly better compared with the EVD group. This study showed that the transcortical approach for ventricular hemorrhage compared with EVD improved the hematoma clearance rate, shortened catheterization time, reduced the incidence of postoperative hydrocephalus, decreased patient mortality, led to a better prognosis, and reduced complications of hydrocephalus.

Although papillary thyroid cancers are known to have a relatively low risk of recurrence, several factors are associated with a higher risk of recurrence, such as extrathyroidal extension, nodal metastasis, and BRAF gene mutation. However, predicting disease recurrence and prognosis in patients undergoing thyroidectomy is clinically difficult. To detect new algorithms that predict recurrence, inductive logic programming was used in this study. ⋯ Three rules that could predict recurrence were identified, with postoperative thyroglobulin level being the most powerful variable that correlated with recurrence. The rules identified in our study, when applied to the 161 cases for validation, were able to predict 71.4% (10 of 14) of the recurrences. Our study highlights that inductive logic programming could have a useful application in predicting recurrence among thyroid patients.

We designed this study to assess the effectiveness of prealbumin as an indicator of growth as well as a nutritional marker in neonates. Between March 2017 and June 2019, we measured serum prealbumin concentrations of 80 neonates in neonatal intensive care unit at birth, postnatal day 14 and 28, and classified them into 3 groups (early preterm, late preterm, and term infants). And we examined correlation among prealbumin levels, nutritional intake, and anthropometric measurements (weight, length, and head circumference) in neonates. ⋯ At birth, prealbumin levels were the lowest in late preterm babies, implying that they are nutritionally deficient and need nutritional support. At postnatal day 28, the prealbumin levels of many preterm infants did not reach those seen in term babies at birth, suggesting the presence of extrauterine growth restriction. Prealbumin can be considered as an indicator of sufficient growth in early preterm infants.
