The focus of this prospective cohort study was to evaluate the risk factors of severe acute skin toxicity (grade ≥2) in 100 patients with breast cancer (BC) during radiotherapy (RT). The patients were evaluated weekly during RT and 3 months after treatment. The endpoint included the occurrence of skin toxicity grade ≥2, according to Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). ⋯ In the univariate and multivariate analysis, skin phototype moderate brown (HR = 1.586, P = .042; HR = 1.706, P = .022, respectively) and dark brown or black (HR = 4.517, P < .001; HR = 5.336, P < 0.001, respectively) was significantly associated with the skin toxicity. Tangential field separation >21 cm (HR = 2.550, P = .009, HR = 2.923, P = .003), in women that were submitted to conservative surgery indicates indirectly that large breast size was also significantly associated with skin toxicity. Women with large breasts and dark brown or black skin should be followed more carefully during RT, which should be undergone in the morning, especially when submitted to conventional RT techniques, common in developing countries.

Currently, there is no consensus regarding the best treatment for patients with thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO). Regenerative medicine, such as bone marrow stem cells or adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) transplantation, have proven efficacy in improving tissue perfusion and wound healing in clinical trials. In this case, we used nanofat grafting to treat severe conditions in a patient with TAO, with promising outcomes. ⋯ The regenerative ability of centrifuged nanofat grafts not only helps wound healing but also helps reverse vasospasm and preserve remnant tissue perfusion.

This study investigated whether administering erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) improves endothelial function in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) and anemia. ⋯ This is the first clinical study to demonstrate that an ESA improves endothelial dysfunction, left ventricular hypertrophy, and left atrial volume in patients with non-dialysis CKD. Thus, ESAs may be considered as adjunctive therapy for reducing cardiovascular risk in these patients.

Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular and renal diseases. It is of great importance to develop effective risk prediction models to identify high-risk groups of hypertension. This study is to establish and verify a nomogram model for predicting the risk of hypertension among Kazakh herders in Xinjiang, China. ⋯ The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the modeling set and the verification set was 0.803 and 0.809, respectively. Moreover, the calibration curve showed a higher agreement between the nomogram prediction and the actual observation of hypertension. The risk prediction nomogram model has good predictive ability and could be used as an effective tool for the risk prediction of hypertension among Kazakh herders in Xinjiang.

This article was to investigate risk factors influencing liver cancer prognosis after hepatectomy. Patients undergoing hepatectomy after being diagnosed with liver cancer in Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University were collected in the retrospective cohort study between January 2012 and December 2017, and divided into disease progression and non-progression groups based on their prognostic status. Univariate analysis was performed on the patients' baseline and laboratory test data, with multivariate logistic regression further conducted to investigate the independent risk factors for liver cancer progression after hepatectomy. ⋯ The results indicated that patients with high ALP level (odds ratio [OR] = 1.004, 95%CI: 1.002-1.007, P = .003) and with a history of hepatitis B (OR = 2.182, 95%CI: 1.165-4.086, P = .015) had a higher risk of liver cancer progression compared with those of lower ALP level and those without hepatitis B respectively, whereas the elevated level of LYM (OR = 0.710, 95%CI: 0.516-0.978, P = .034) had favorable progression. The elevated ALP level and a history of hepatitis B may increase the risk of death or cancer recurrence, whereas high LYM level may decrease poor progression among liver cancer patients after hepatectomy. More importance should be attached to the improvement of the liver function and treatment of hepatitis B to enable a better outcome for the patients.
