Oral diseases or poor oral hygiene have close connections with systemic inflammatory reaction, which is one of major mechanism in the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We conducted a research assuming that better oral hygiene care would be negatively related with the risk of developing new-onset CKD. From 2003 to 2004, a total of 158,495 participants from the Korean national health insurance data sharing service which provides health screening data including variables as age, sex, vascular risk factors, medication information, indicators regarding oral hygiene, and laboratory results. ⋯ In multivariable analysis with adjustment for age, sex, demographics, vascular risk factors, blood pressure, and blood laboratory results, frequent tooth brushing (≥3 times a day) was negatively related to occurrence of CKD (hazard ratio: 0.90, 95% confidence interval [0.83-0.99], P = .043, P value for trend = .043). Participants with improved oral hygiene (≥3 times a day) have showed less risk of CKD. Additional interventional studies are in need to establish causative relationship between oral hygiene and risk of CKD.

CB-LPD, MGUS, T-LGLL, and PRCA: A rare case report of 4 concomitant hematological disorders.
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a clinically asymptomatic clonal plasma cell or lymphoplasmacytic proliferative disorder. Recently, some case reports have described the association of pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) with MGUS, even with a relatively low monoclonal immunoglobulin burden. T large granular lymphocyte leukemia (T-LGLL) is a chronic lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by clonal expansion of T large granular lymphocytes, which is rare in China. There are some reports about T-LGL leukemia in patients with B-cell lymphoma; however, it is very rare that T-LGLL coexists with MGUS and clonal B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (CB-LPD). ⋯ We report a patient with 4 concomitant hematological disorders: T-LGLL, MGUS, CB-LPD, and PRCA, aiming to represent the clinical and flow cytometry characteristics of these concomitant diseases, analyze the mechanism between diseases, and provide a clinical reference.

To investigate the values of erector spinae muscle cross-sectional area (ESMcsa) loss for diagnosing intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) and predicting the 60-day survival status in patients with mechanical ventilation. ⋯ As suggested by the ESMcsa Loss Ratios of the patients with mechanical ventilation on the 7th day of ICU admission, it offers a desirable objective indicator for the diagnosis of ICU-AW, and provides certain values for predicting the 60-day survival status of patients with mechanical ventilation in the ICU.

Endovascular therapy for acute basilar artery occlusion caused by vertebral artery dissection: Case report.
The best endovascular therapy revascularization strategies for acute ischemic stroke caused by vertebral artery dissection (VAD) are unclear. We describes a case of basilar artery (BA) occlusion caused by extracranial VAD, in which we used a stent-retriever to achieve thrombectomy in the BA through the contralateral vertebral artery (VA). ⋯ When extracranial VAD complicated with BA occlusion, choosing the clean-road path to perform a BA thrombectomy may be a fast and effective treatment strategy.

Distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) significantly differs among individuals with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This analysis was carried out to find prognostic risk factors of DMFS and create a nomogram to predict DMFS for NPC patients who received Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). During March 2008 to January 2010, 437 patients with confirmed NPC from First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University were recruited into this study. ⋯ The 3 and 5-year area under the curve (AUC) of ROC for nomogram and TMN stage were 0.828 and 0.612, 0.809, and 0.571, respectively. Classifying risk subgroups based on optimal cut-off value contributes to the effective discrimination of distant metastasis. The nomogram developed for this study is useful for oncologists to accurately predict DMFS and facilitates individualized treatment for patients with NPC.
